Port 445: to close it or not to close?

I heard, that through this port you can easy access pc and owerload cpu, asf. My question: do I have to close this port? If yes, then how? And other ports, how about them? Now I'm using Outpost Firewall, and with it I did something like closing that port, but I'm no sure, cose the programm is bit complicated as ZoneAlarm. But people say, that Outpost is better than ZA. Comments are welcome.

Helmut.I haven't used Outpost.I have used Zone Alarm and Sygate.I would investigate that port thru a website that lists ports and programs that normally use that port.Visual Zone by Zone labs has that link.(this is an add on to zone alarm basic, free at wilders.org)Active Ports is a free program that shows which ports are open/being used and who is using what port. You can also close a port with this program.(on my computer port 445 is used by Microsoft)You can download Active Ports version 1.4 at WebAttack.com. Active Ports is small and easy to use,and works on my xp.Visual Zone is very good also and has more info and options.I liked that also.
