I took the Shields leaktet and leaked..port 23 is open...

I am on Wireless and connect with usb d-link WUA-1340 I do not do any Banking, paying on line but could protect my computer better But...

Is my connection with the Web on port 23?

I installed Outpost (which I uninstalled) because I took the test with it installed and it still did not pass, so I am thinking its my wireless WIFI connection which is at a Trailer park and it is the Parks Connection to us.

How do I find out What program uses the port 23? It says Telnet is most often the one but What program is that, I have no program called Telnet.

I have read Steves site for hours, it is greek to me, I just want to protect my computer yet I don't want to get blocked from using the internet, I can't find anything that will tell me what program (Can) use this program that I have, nothing is using it as far as I can see but maybe someone will come along and give me a hint where to look.

Telnet
Enables a remote user to log on to this computer and run programs, and supports various TCP/IP Telnet clients, including UNIX-based and Windows-based computers. If this service is stopped, remote user access to programs might be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

I have mine disabled.
If something stops working, remember the
settings you had before.

Thank you, nice site, the only problem I have is I do not have Telnet listed in my services, its just when my computer is scaned at pc Flank or Shield up, it reports that my port 23 is open, even though nothing is using it at the time, (its open) and says to close it for safety..

I do not know if in the past year I installed something then uninstalled it to open this port? Its just that it says in those two sites that the port is used for Telnet, is there another program in services that may be using that port sometimes? Any help would be appreciated.

This is what it says....

Solicited TCP Packets: RECEIVED (FAILED) — As detailed in the port report below, one or more of your system's ports actively responded to our deliberate attempts to establish a connection. It is generally possible to increase your system's security by hiding it from the probes of potentially hostile hackers. Please see the details presented by the specific port links below, as well as the various resources on this site, and in our extremely helpful and active user community.

Unsolicited Packets: PASSED — No Internet packets of any sort were received from your system as a side-effect of our attempts to elicit some response from any of the ports listed above. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system remained wisely silent. (Except for the fact that not all of its ports are completely stealthed as shown below.)

Ping Reply: RECEIVED (FAILED) — Your system REPLIED to our Ping (ICMP Echo) requests, making it visible on the Internet. Most personal firewalls can be configured to block, drop, and ignore such ping requests in order to better hide systems from hackers. This is highly recommended since "Ping" is among the oldest and most common methods used to locate systems prior to further exploitation.

Telnet
OPEN! Telnet provides a remote command prompt window which allows remote systems to be configured and controlled. Any system that appears to be offering a Telnet connection — like yours is right now — is offering the potential for total command-level access. Since a surprising number of Telnet servers are known to have no password, this open Telnet port will be attracting a LOT of the wrong kind of attention. If your network contains a residential NAT or DSL router, it may be that its "WAN-side" management interface is open and accepting connections. No matter what the cause, you should immediately attend to this open Telnet port.

You can create rules with Outpost.

Go to options/system/rules then add folowing rules:

Make sure you have images turned on in My
computing net, to see the screen shot.

I typed 23 for the port and telnet showed up.

Also create a rule for outbound and udp, in/out
if you don't pass the test.
