On a Window 9.x machine, start>run> type in "command", if if your using a NT based machine type in "cmd"...

You will see a command prompt...

Type in "nbtstat -a"

It will display all the open ports...

Do NOT type in the " " ...

Peter what Norm means is go to pc flank and do a advanced port scan you will see this link to the left on their site

just select tcp standard scan
and tick this option
Scan desired ports and/or the range of ports.
Type in the port number and/or port range, separated by commas (example: 14, 80, 200-240).
type in 139
disable your firewall it should show "CLOSED"

Active Ports program will tell you what ports are open and what application is using that port.Smartline.com has it,I think I found it at webattack though. You can close a port with this desk-top program also.Regards.JB

Nbtstat is meant "display protocl statistics and current TCP/IP connections using NetBios over TCP/IP". ie: show you the NetBios names in use.

I think what Steve meant you to type is

netstat -a

That will give you computername:port and whether its Established, Listening or a couple of other things.

I prefer netstat -an, this lists IPaddress:port.

I like FoundStone's Fport as it lists which Task/process owns the open port.

Got to watch my fat fingering, that should have been "is meant to".

Lesley, you can use whatever you like with a firewall up and running. What results you'll see may vary though.
