Hi I am on a friends machine and I hooked it up to an unwired connection and there seems to be some popup infection called Messenger Service. It first popped up while I was downloading a Firewall(Zone Alarm) and AVG for his protection. I used ctrl+alt+del instead of clicking ok on the window/popup. When I did this the file looked like and exe but I am not sure about these things. I scanned with AVG but nothing. Is there some way to get rid of it? In the window/popup it also says "Download Registry sweeper from www.win32registry.com" then there is an OK button. How do I stop this and what is it!

Or you can try this
Go to the START menu, Select Run and type in services.msc and click OK.

Now a new window will appear with lots of "services" on the right hand side...

Scroll down and find the Messenger service, select it, right click it and choose properties.

Under Startup Type select Manual. (or Disabled)

Then click the Stop button.

Then click the Apply button.

Then click the OK button.

Messenger Service Spam can no longer be received on your machine....

However you will now no longer receive legitimate net send or alerter messages either, but for most folk this is not going to be a problem. If you are using a NAT router to access the Internet then you will be immune to these Messenger Service Spam popups as they can only be received by public IP addresses and NOT the private IP addresses that NAT routers use for internal networks.

Install SP2, and by default the Messenger Service is turned off. SP2 will also include other security stuff you might need.

Thanks everyone.

Bob- Can you tell me more about "However you will now no longer receive legitimate net send or alerter messages either, but for most folk this is not going to be a problem. I don't know what is Legitimate alerter messages etc. Or what a NAT router is. I have a standalone set up and so does my friend so if it has something to do with networking then we are cool! Except for that bit about alerter thingys...dunno what that is.

Oh thanks yeah I don't think I will be into networking for a while!
Oh I didn't gte sp2 because I have dialup and waiting for someone to come over with it on cd!

Just a note for those that do this that you need to disable both in the "General" and "log on" tabs of "services.msc" as Windows Messenger goes into the systray and can be mistaken for Windows Messenger if you have that installed. They look the same in the systray as I found out tonight.

OK I wasn't sure what it was....

One more thing for some reason....I tried this on my pc but Windows Messenger has been showing up in my systray after each boot. Why is this? I can't remember if I need it because I have the fax facility installed which I use now and then. I also have Msn Messenger and will it affect it if I uninstall?

MSN messenger is a real bug, that's why it's in your tray...even if you disable it in startup, as soon as you do anything like open Outlook Express or whatever it goes right back into startup. If you want it totally removed there is a way.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

MMmmm I don't quite understand. OK I guess until I actually use it then I won't understand. What does it do? I want to use MSN messenger. What I am seeing in the sytray is windows messenger not MSN Messenger. I never use Outlook as it is crap! Now that I think about it I accidentally start Outlook sometimes when I click onto email addies on some sites where I should be copying and pasting them then sending from my Yahoo account instead. That would do it I guess?
