Please help! I got a trojan on my computer last night, when someone was browsing the internet. I have used Ad Aware to get rid of the malicious files, installed the newest version of Spyware Blaster and run my AV, Eztrust Antivirus, 6.1.7, I think is the version. I keep trying to download the latest updates at housecall to no avail. It gives me an IE error report and then the page closes on me. I want to try a free online virus scanner to get rid of this virus, but I can't get any definitions to download. I keep getting the virus/trojan every time I go online. It has highjacked my homepage to about.blank and files that Adaware keeps finding are associated with Cool Web Search. EzTrust tells me it is infected with the trojan Winshow BV and Winshow BM. I cannot figure out if it is deleting the files or not. I have updated my definitions and run several scans. It finds infections every time and deletes them, but they keep coming back. PLEASE HELP!
Dianna

Not an easy one to be rid of - see if these instructions help
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Try Panda it will usually run when trend micro fails.
Set the computer up to show hidden files. Go to control panel>folder options>view>check the circle beside" show hidden files and folders">apply>ok.
Clean up some temp files.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\Temp and delete the contents of that folder(not the folder itself )
Go to C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch and delete the contents of the folder. For each user of the computer go to C:\Documents and Settings\<each user>\Local Settings and delete the contenets of these three folders if they exist:
Temp
Temporary Internet Files
History
And for each user go to C:\Documents and Settings\<each user>\Cookies and delete the contents of that folder.
Index files will not delete.Empty the recycle bin and purge the sustem restore folder. To purge the restore folder and make a new restore point first go to start>control panel>system>system restore tab>check the box beside "turn off system restore">apply>ok. Restart the computer and go back and uncheck the box>apply>ok.
To make a new restore point go to start>run>type in msconfig>ok>launch syatem restore>create a restore point>next>name it anything you want to>create>close.
Then download and update these two prograams cwshredder (use the stand alone version on the right side of the screen) and About Buster and some more info How to use about buster Update them both then boot into Safe Mode run all your spyware removers, cwshredder, and you antivirus.
You can download Hijack This at this link http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ then place it into a folder of it's on, such as C:\HJT, so that back up copies can be made and not clutter your desktop or other folders and the backup copies of deleted items can be easily located if needed.
Once saved double click HijackThis.exe, and press "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents into the text editor.Once you copy it into the text editor scroll down below Options and check the "check this box to preserve you spacing". Do not fix anthing yet. Let someone review your log.

Okay, I have run my Adawre several times, the About This, the CW Shredder, EZ Trust AV, and deleted the tmp. files and history to no avail. I have not gone into safe mode and run anything YET. HEre is my Hijack This log file:

First of all uninstall spywarebegone, it is a rogue program that gives false positives.
Next boot into safe mode, run a HT scan and remove these entries (close all other windows and browsers except HT):

Then while still in safe mode navigate to the following file and delete it. It will be a hidden file so go to start>control panel>folder option>view>check the box beside "show hidden files and folders">apply>ok
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipui32.exe
Next reboot to normal mode and post another HT log.

Jabuck, I already uninstalled Spyware Begone. It wouldn't let me do anything, other than show me adware. Do you mind telling me how to get into safe mode with Windows XP? I have done it before, but it has been a while and I can't remember how to get there. I was thinking it was somewhere in msconfig with XP.
Dianna

In responce 2 there is a link describing how to get into safe mode. Just click on the gray safe mode. Also you should run all the spyware removers, cwshredder and your anti virus from safe mode. Only necessary windows files are running making it easier for them to get rid of unwanted items.

Okay, I went into safe mode and ran my AV, CW Shredder, About Buster, Adaware, and I think that is all. I am so tired, I can't think straight anymore. When I restarted the computer after going into msconfig and rechecking the normal startup, I didn't get the open IE window wanting to go to about.blank, BUT.....now I have another problem. When I double clicked my IE icon, I got a box coming up telling me iexplore.exe does not exist and to browse to where I wanted to find the program to open it with. Well, I apparently made a huge mistake, as I browsed to Internet Explorer, then it made me choose something in that box and I chose Internet Connection Wizard. I tried to use it to reset my internet connection, but now every time I try to go online with IE, it opens the internet connection wizard. I cannot figure out how to fix that where it opens like it is supposed to, either. :( Also, when I tried connecting with Mozilla Firefox, it wouldn't make a connection, gave me an error. So I closed it out and just went to start/connect to and managed to get online like that. Then I opened Mozilla and am using it to type this message. I never did get to do the HT thing again. Do you have any idea how I can reconfigure IE to open correctly with the connect to box again? I am ready to pull out all of my hair at this point. This is the worst virus/trojan I have ever encountered.
Dianna

I'm guessing that you may have checked this item when you deleted the HT items which would cause the problem:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iexplore.exe] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
It was right beside the bad guy which is:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ipui32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipui32.exe
Just run HT again but instead of clicking "do a system scan" click "view the list of backups" and check this item: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iexplore.exe] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe then click restore.

jabuck, I never deleted anything with Hijack This. I ran another log file and here it is, I can't find that item at all on this one.
