After I start the computer, high risk alerts by Norton AV pop-up to notify that the file E:\WINDOWS\SVCHOST.DLL has been infected by Backdoor.Graybird trojan - it could not be repaired, and access was denied. The computer turns very sluggish and doesn't respond - the sound that the computer makes indicates that many processes are happening - i push Ctrl-Alt-Del and see that there is a long list of .exe programs that i did not open running in the 'processes' tab of task manager. Because the computer is freezing up, all i could do was to reboot into safe mode or shut down. Can anyone please help with solutions to get rid of this virus?

I did a full system scan in safe mode and only the file svchost.dll was found to be infected. I tried deleting the file, but it just comes back reinfected when i reboot. I wanted to format the drive and reinstall windows but everytime i get to restarting the computer part before installing, i get the message "line 2174 of INF file \txtsetup.sif is invalid. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit." i'd be very grateful if anyone can help me with this problem.

Thank you!

Thank you for your rapid responses. :D

Amidst my fiddling in attempt to solve the problem, i found a Windows 2000 setup CD which i couldn't find before.

I inserted the CD just after reboot and it was able to enter setup straight away. It allowed me to format the drive first then install windows again. It has just finished setup and everything appears normal.

The lucky thing was i actually planned to format the drive a few hours before i knew of the trojan infection. So i had backed up my files already.

Thank you again and thank God. I will remember your answer for if there is a next time. But hopefully not~
