pic at boot-up and shut down?

At start-up and shut down a pic is displayed from "my picture" folder. I have deleted the file and the pic continues to display as a wall paper type pic and then disappears after win98 is fully up. At shut down it displays as wall paper and then dissappears and computer shuts off/or restarts. what type or kind of virus is this, I have Norton installed and has been installed before this happened and is fully updated...

This can happen if you have set a BMP as wallpaper and then overlaid a JPEG using active desktop. The BMP image wll be displayed and then the JPEG is put 'over' it because active desktop has been enabled. You could try right clicking your desktop, select Active Desktop,View as web page and then left click to disable it (if enabled). This will drop you back to your original wallpaper. If you have actually deleted the file then it couldn't really be the above that's doing it. Maybe you have another copy somewhere else? The other thing I can think of, is that someone has modified you startup/shutdown pictures to display something other than the 'Windows blue sky' and the 'It is now safe to switch off your computer' although this is pretty remote. It could be a virus, but I've not heard of this one yet.......
