Subject: Pesky Spyware?
OS: Windows XP Pro 5.1.2600 S
CPU/Ram: Mobile Pentium 4 3.06Ghz/
Comment:

I'm trying to clean out my system of Spyware. I've managed to clean out most of it, but theres a few items I have not been able to defeat.

Every now and then, MS AntiSpyware pops up with Adware.AdSLDPBC and despite my cleaning it it keeps coming back. After about 5 reboots/removals it has stopped coming up for now.

I have also been unsuccessfull at removing a file called q297394312_disk.dll whic I can only identify as a CWS variant, but CWShredder can't detect/remove it. A search in Process Explorer shows its in use by explorer.exe and winlogon.exe.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

If response #1 does not help do the following and I'll review the log. You will most likely need to post a Hijack This log so that the files associated with the hijacker can be identified. You can download Hijack This at this link http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ then place it into a folder of it's on, such as C:\HJT, so that back up copies can be made and not clutter your desktop or other folders and the backup copies of deleted items can be easily located if needed.

Once saved double click HijackThis.exe, and press "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents into the text editor.

Do not fix anthing yet.

Once the log is posted an scan or two may be required and some files may need to be deleted to remove the possible cws,vx2/Look2Me infections.

If you know what file you want to delete just boot into your recovery console... and delete it. Also it is best to do spyware scans with SYSTEM RESTORE turned off and in safe mode. Try other spyware scans ie Spybot S&D, Adaware. Good Luck

#1: Scan did find some reminants of other spyware that Ad-Aware, Spybot, MSAntiSpyware, CWShredder and myself had missed.

#3: Read my comment to #1 :) I used em all in both normal and safe mode. Thanks for the tip though.

#2: I have removed most spyware using HJT and the above programs. I could use some experienced opinions based on the current state. Thanks:

Tea timer should be turned off for best results with scans, it will interfer with their ability to remove some items.

Download DelDomains.inf to the desktop and install.Run HT again and check to delete these items:

O2 - BHO: C:\WINDOWS\adsldpbc.dll - {405132A4-5DD1-4BA8-A181-95C8D435093A} - C:\WINDOWS\adsldpbc.dll

O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - Unknown owner - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" -d -f "%ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.ini (file missing)

Boot into safe mode and set up the computer to view hidden files. Go to start>control panel>folder options>view tab>check the circle beside "show hidden files and folders" apply>ok.Navigate to and delete these two files:

C:\WINDOWS\adsldpbc.dll

C:\WINDOWS\q297394312_disk.dll

THe run crap cleaner in response #6

try to choose spyware remover wisely.
there are more than 350 spyware removers in the market and majority of them are really bad products made just to deceive the user.
Read reviews:
here is the list of good antispyware programs and here is the list of bad programs called corrupt antispyware

Jabuck:

I Installed DelDomains.inf and removed the recommended items in HJT (all of which I have done before except the packet capture one because I do have network capture/analysis software on this PC. I deleted it this time though.)

Booted into Safe Mode...

C:\WINDOWS\adsldpbc.dll does not exist

C:\WINDOWS\q297394312_disk.dll still gives "Access is Denied" when I try to delete it. I have tried deleting this file in Safe Mode with command prompt, normal, using Delete on Boot programs, etc.. and have been unsuccessfull. There were other Q???_disk.dll files that I deleted without any issues prior to posting to this forum.

I ran both the Cleaner, and Issues analysis and cleansing while still in safe mode.

Rebooted the PC:

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.searchmeup.com was not there when I went to delete it, but I just ran another HT log and it has come back.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: style32 - C:\WINDOWS\q297394312_disk.dll is still there

I have the HT log saved if you want me to post it

It seems most of the times that I boot, Windows Anti-Spyware comes up with this peice of nastyness trying to install itself. I havent heard back since my last post, so I thought I would post back that this is still going on despite the efforts put forth ss far.

Any brave takers? :)
