Just got VAIO FR130. Came with PC-cillin 2002. It has a firewall, I have it enabled and have the XP firewall enabled. Tested using Shields-Up and it tested "total stealth" same as my desktop with AVG and zone alarm. Just wanted an opinion as to whether I am safe or missing something. Thanks for any input.

Don't have more than one Firewall or AV Program Running at the same time

I have Pc-Cillin - I like it because it is unobtrusive - 'small' and is so easy to use

People will probably tell you that other Firewalls are better - this is because PC-Cillin is not 'rule-based' as are the 'bigger' ones - but at least you can 'see' what's happening which is more than you can with the XP one

As regards the AV part of it - that works well - as well as the others I think - it has 'caught' many Viruses for me

If you want to use Zone Alarm then Disable the Pc-cillin one as well as the XP one

Lesley

As a general rule, it is best to have only one firewall.

The PC-Cillin firewall does not block outgoing traffic. It only examines incoming traffic and stops the connection when it detects suspicious activity. If you pick up a trojan or spyware, it will not alert you to outgoing traffic.

I use the PC-Cillin firewall together with Sygate and have not had a problem. PC-Cillin has alerted me to a few netbios scans that got past Sygate.

Is it ok to have two Firewalls running then - there seems to be conflicting opinions on this ?

No, it is usually not ok to run two firewalls. But Pc cillin is an AV program with a firewall feature. It scans the connection for incoming viruses and also stops the connection if any suspicious scanning activity is detected. It also masks the ip address for stealth browsing.

I read many pc cillin reviews before I started using it. One review recommended using an additional firewall because otherwise there is no control over outbound connections.

My pc-cillin works fine with zone alarm (on an old pc i dont really care about) and with sygate (on my good pc). I have not had any problems with either setup.

PC Cillin shipped with my motherboard, video card and dvd writer, so I have 3 copies. You usually do not get such a good, full-featured program for free so easily!
