Hi,

I am facing the problem that my PC shuts down whenever he wants. Most of the time it's when it really pisses me off, because I was working on something. I will start by discribing when he shuts down:
- ALWAYS when I'm trying to burn DVD
- Often when there is absolutely nothing going on on my PC (It just is turned on, but I'm not using it etc.)
- Sometimes when IE 6 or WinAmp are in Use, but not always.

When it shuts Down, it automatically tries to reboot itself. But when the booting process reaches the desktop it automatically reboots again. In that case I have to turn off the PC completely, and wait some secounds before I switch on the almighty Power Button.

Right Now I am Using:
Ad-Aware 6.0
CW Shredder
Pest Patrol 4.2.0.33
Spybot Search and Destroy

as Virus Scanners, and Zone Alarm as my Firewall.

All Programms have been Updated during the recent "Sasser Wars", but none of them detects anything that could cause the System Shutdown.
Any Ideas how I can stop this Problem? Any help would be more than appreciated.

Can you boot into safemode at all?
Check your event viewer?
Any recent hardware/software installations?
Any error messages at all?
What have spybot and adaware found if any?
Wich OS are you running

In addition to the above, I would suggest checking your CPU heat.. sounds much like a heat problem.

You say it always reboots during DVD burning, that's a fairly intense CPU activity, and it wouldn't surprise me that it shuts down during that time.

As a basic test, try something simple like taking the sides of your case off, and letting some freeflow air run through it for a few hours, and burn a DVD in the process. AMD's in particular generally have heat issues.

Let me know if this helps.

Yes, I can boot in Safe Mode. One time as my PC has rebooted itself, it automatically went to the screen where I Can choose in what Mode I want to restart. It said that this was because Windows wasn't shut down correctly.
Checked Event Viewer.
The only Programs I installed during the last months were Virus Scanners (as Spybot and Ad-Aware), and Updates of Programs that were already installed on my PC (newer Divx Version etc).
Nope, theres no sign of an error Message at all.
Ad-Aware found 2 possible Browser Hijack attempts, Something called Coolweb Search (That may have been the annoying thing that changed my Start Homepage of the Browser) and many many tracking cookies.
Spybot found nothing that wasn't already there before the Problems occured. But maybe I should mention that the computer also shutted down often during my less pleasent meeting with Sasser. But there wasn't this Command window thing that at least gave me a countdown to when the PC reboots.
I am using Windows XP 2000 Professional Home Edition.
I also thought of an Hardware Problem like CPU heat etc. therefore I took my Harddrive and connected it to the computer of a friend of mine, who uses different Hardware. And there were ecactly the same problems. Since I'm using two Harddrives (One Main with all the Programs and One as pure data Storage) I also connected the secound to my friends PC, and it also ran without any Problems. Therefore I figure that it must be a software Problem on my Main Drive.

The countdown sounds like a virus that came out a while ago known commonly as the blaster worm. First follow the following directions:
(I assume by your pc specs you have win xp)

To stop your machine from shutting down once this message is displayed, simply go to the start menu and select run. Then type shutdown -a in the text box and click the OK button. This will stop the machine from shutting down.
Then follow the directions here:

You should be problem free now.

In regards to cool websearch, use cw shreder and notice which program it "removes" then post back which it is and I'll see if I can help with that pesky bug.
(cw shredder doesn't always completely remove the cool websearch hijackers) I spent 3 days removing different variants because they kept coming back.

Hi,

I've been seaching the web for a solution to this. Todate, I've read that the problem could be caused by any of the following:

1. Norton Anti-Virus (in conjunction with Netscape software modules).
2. The Graphics Card not functioning correctly
3. Overheating (controlled by the BIOS to reboot in some cases).
4. Virus
5. Dry connections on the PS2 mouse/keyboard

I know it's not much, but I've attemtped to go down the list and elimiate each one in turn.

Still no joy - but it may help you.

I've got a Windows 98 and XP that experience this problem.

Best of luck,

Ian
