PC shut down after safeboot restart...

Specs: Windows XP
Hi everone!
I have a PC, XP, and Avast as antivirus.
The other day a pop-up appeared telling me that i needed to renew my Avast registration, which isn't the case so I let it go.
This pop-up came back many times a day so i decided to do a scan to check for virus. I didn't find anything.
So i put msconfig in the run window to restart my computer in safeboot to look for the virus. It shut down and when in the process of restarting it shut down like when I pull the power cord. Since then I've tried to restart in every possible mode available when i press F8. And now it says that my computer wasn't shut down properly so they scan the all system, blablabla, and it always stop at about 26% of the scanning and shut down again...
How can I destroy this virus and restart my computer again??? Please HELP!! I don't want to reinstall XP from the beginning...
THanks foryour consideration!!!
