Is there a way to put a password on a computer so that no one can start the computer without entering it?

I don't recommend the Access Denied program
because I once forgot my password using it and in 5
minutes I already had it disabled. And especially for
Windows 98 which the registry and system files can
be modified under DOS so an experienced user can
easily disable it. However, that was like 5 years ago
and I would hope it has improved by now but I
thought I'd just through that out.

Most computers have a built in CMOS Setup password option in its BIOS. Requires the password be typed in before it will boot the OS or even a diskette.

Accessible from the CMOS Setup screens.

Only draw back, is that if you forget it, you have to open the box, remove the CMOS Setup battery or short the CMOS configuration jumper to clear it. But at least you will know someone has done this.

On some laptops this feature requires the original sells receipt and a visit to an authorized service center to have the chip it is stored in replaced.

Use the CMOS settings to set a USER password and an ADMIN password in your BIOS of 98.
Also, www.webattack.com in their security section has several free programs that work OK, good enough for most folks.
