Hi,
Is there a way to create a password on my computer's operating system so that others cannot gain access to my files or other programs ? There have been times when others have deleted my precious data and programs.
I would be thankful if any body can show me how to do it.
Thanks

joss

XP and 2000 has password protetcion that really does work. You could install a password in the bios. This would only allow you to start the computer. One note of caution, it takes a little effort to disable it, but it can be done by removing the cmos battery or resetting the cmos jumper. It will stop the casual user from accessing your computer.

I like armed guards.

Nobody messes with my computer while two seven foot tall, no-neck guys with AK-47s are standing next to it.

:)

In a word NO
If you just press cancel your straight in that's how "Good" the password sceme on 98 is.
Follow Capt's advice and you won't go far wrong.

Enter the bios during startup(usually tapping or holding the delete key during the boot sequence to enter the bios setup). Then enter the system password of your choice.

BIOS password has absolutely nothing to do with win98 or XP or what so ever.
You can have a BIOS password even with out the hard disk.
It works at the ROM level which is far far more basic than the win98 or XP passwords which are OS level.

PS: I have accessed so called password protected folder/ drive on win2k with great ease. Anyone who knows a bit of computers can hack into it. This ofc only if you are worried about privacy.
if all you are worried about is ppl deleting your stuff then win2k/XP protection is good enough.
A BIOS password makes the comp totally inaccessible to anybody who does not know the password.

If you want easy security from physical attacks, get a removable hard drive tray so you can pull the hard drive out easily and lock it in a safe when the computer isn't running.
