Hello,

I'm a "homestay parent" which means I take in international students who come to learn English. The students only stay a couple months at a time before moving out on their own or with friends. Some of them don't have their own computers, so I setup a limited account for them on mine. I'm looking some good access restriction software that will let me do the following:

- Limit internet usage.
- Limit computer usage (automatic log out).
- Restrict access to drives and folders other than their own documents folder.
- Restrict access to certain functions like Control Panel and Task Manager.
- Filter inappropriate web content.

I've tried SentryPC and Net Nanny so far. SentryPC was very buggy and kept popping up with indeclinable error messages. And Net Nanny seems too limited and out of date for what I want.

Any suggestions?

Try Windows StreadyState (it's free).

Additionally if I were you I would opt for Windows Vista as it comes with cool built-in parental control program. See link below for more info.

Frankly....I would consider a second computer
for your guest.

By the way....Good for you in opening your home to these students....Did it for two years and found it very rewarding...(Most of the time)

All brought joy into our home ...some when they arrived and others when they left....LOL!

If it is a matter of money there are organizations that can help with a pc (free).

As to monitoring the Guest activities well ....
JUST MY OPINION:
you are responsible for their saftey and well being during the visit but also their growth as a young adult. That's a heap.

But
If they are old enough to leave home and old enough to leave your home then I would think
as adults what web site they visit is up to them.

It is your home and your computer and by all means ,guest should comply with your rules...or leave.

I probably didn't understand what Filter inappropriate web content is.

W.L.
