Hi,

a week ago I could get to sites home pages but anytime I hit a link on any of various sites, I'd get page cannot be displayed and I was getting an ie host error. restored reg, reloaded ie. stopped the ie host error but it was a hit or miss as for getting on the internet, 1 out of 5 times I'd connect. Used the pc later the same night and everything was fine. The next day same problem. Now, I can't even get to a site. I am assuming I have a virus. The problem is I can't even get to a site to download any possible fixes. Any suggestions on how to fix this and does this sound like a virus., New to viruses.

Oh and I have a linksys router and my laptop connects fine.

Thanks

Umm...have you tried running a virus scan?

I believe both "spybot" and "adaware" detect certain spyware that mess with the hosts file.

Otherwise, open your hosts file (go to start->find->files and folders->"hosts" ...I believe it's under windows/etc/drivers/hosts, or something like that, in Windows 98...I don't remember, though...). Then delete any suspicious entries (if this is a home computer, then likely the only entry should be "127.0.0.1 localhost"; otherwise, talk to your administrator...or just have him fix it..)

I checked the host file and nothing suspicious.

It is my home pc so I am the administrator.

Any help on this would be most appreciated.
Unfortunately my virus scan software is not up to date and I can't access the internet to update it. Though I run lavasoft ad aware and it always finds 5 files which I delete and the next time I turn the pc on they are there again.
