Hi
My dad's isp is Orange (was wanadoo). He has an email address and gets other peoples emails in his folder!! Like for example if his addy was david@funfair.fsnet.co.uk apparently any name in front of the @sign can get into his in box if the other person has @funfair in their addy! This is terrible invasion of privacy. I have asked if he can change his name but apparently he cant other than changing his name in front of the @ but then he will still get all the other peoples email and loads of spam with his original name as it cant be deleted. Am I making sense? This is awful. My dad is 76 years old. He doesnt want to use another email service as its easier for him to use his homepage email. Any ideas anyone? I have set up his Norton firewall to block spam but loads is still getting through. Any help appreciated. Thanks

He can still use another email service and make the new service his homepage. That's the only way to go. I know what you're saying about him being 76. My father is in his 80s now. I've been through all that.

Well, not exactly an invasion of privacy because spammers cannot extract information from him unless he responds.

As far as I know what is after the @ sign in this type of setup is unique to the user (funfair in your example).

I think the problem is simply that he is getting spammed - they often try other variants of email addys.

Unfortunately the only real answer is a change of address then to try to invoke good computer habits (such as not responding to junk mail and never putting your email address on the internet).

It should only be necessary to change the funfair bit, so he can still use the same email server.

You worry me a bit about what age I should stop helping around here LOL.

.... correction

"never putting your email address on the internet"

Sorry, I meant never put your email address on the internet "as open text", such as in forums. It's fine via secure sites or when encrypted.

Hi,
I work at BT Broadband support.
Unfortunately SPAM mail addreses to a non-existing user will goto the primary user by default. This functionality is called 'Catch All'. This can be turned off so that emails are either 1) are bounced back to sender or 2) directed to a user of your choice e.g. info@funfair.fsnet.co.uk.
You need to create this 'info' user.

Step one is to logon to your host website e.g. www.fsnet.co.uk; there should be a setting under e.g. 'mail accounts' to turn off 'Catch All'. Call up yr ISP for support.

Cheers,

I too got over 200 plus SPAM a day when Wanadoo went to Orange. I use very careful habits on the internet, so it has got something to do with Orange and their habits, no matter what Orange tell you. Your Dad is not at fault.

I dropped Orange in July and went to a safer server and......hey......presto......no spam.

However, I have a SPAM reporting site that will help, but you must keep it up and report as many as you have the time for.

It is www.spamid.net.

Sure, Orange might well be the culprit in this instance. However, it is equally true to say that if a user gets onto a spammers data base (by their own means or by others) then changing server would be sure to cure it - for a while at least.

Thanks. Thats interesting. My dad does no shopping or business on the pc at all. He surfs very little and he is very careful. I thought he had installed some "My Way" stuff or a toolbar or something that had attached itself to internet explorer but theres nothing to see as an add on or in add/remove. He has the latest Norton Internet Security. He has Ad Aware and Spybot that he updates once a week and runs twice a week. Its strange but it has happened since they switched to Orange. AOHELL is a bind at times but for email , at least you can have so many email addresses and delete all but master one. Being his ripe age hes loathe to change anything so for now he's putting up with it. I have configured Nortons Spam and it has improved sightly...only getting about 25 spam a day but to me even thats bad. I get about 5 spam a day on Aol and I use my pc for everything and am much more daring than my dad!!!
