Comment:

A scan by Symantec shows some ports open and others closed. A scan by GRC shows all ports shielded.

Is this worthy of concern?

Probably not. You are going to have open ports. You couldn't do anything online if you didn't have open ports. I have TCP 139 (NetBIOS) and UDP 137 and 138 blocked on my computer. Otherwise there's really nothing that needs to be blocked. I wouldn't worry.

Even using Symantec's products I cannot pass their test. I find "Shiels Up" to be much more accurate, and you can also scan induividual ports if you want. Another good port scan is at http://www.pcflank.com/ They also have what I consider to be the most comprehensive free trojan scan available. Another site that has free scans I like is at http://www.pcpitstop.com/ Pay special attention to the security results, and you can use their "auto fix" to correct any deficientcies. Take care and all the best!

Hi Valerie, Tope is right, some of these are required open in order to accomplish tasks. Make sure the ones open are not in the 5000 range, these are usually where trojans get in. Unless open ports are said to exist when doing a test on the common ports, you should be fine.

However, do take advantage of a few of the tools at GRC.com, such as Shoot The Messenger and especially the DCOM disabling tool. They are very helpful. Make sure that antivirus is up to speed to :-) Oh yes, PcPitStop is indeed a nice site to put in your favorites, it can tell you a lot about your system and help you fix things you didn't consider a problem.

By the way Capt and Valerie, I did manage to pass all but the Antivirus check of Symantec Security Response, which I'm pretty darn happy about. It was of no surprise that I failed the Antivirus check because I don't use Norton, lol, I use AVG.

Valerie, I searched up a webpage for you showing the ports that trojans use often. Definately make sure these aren't open.:

Well, lol, all this talk about the importance of closing certain ports, and I pass all tests except PCFlank. I have Port 3128 open, so, whoever has the free version of Sygate, do I need to do anything specila to close this port?

All you need to know is what program has that port open. If you want to close it then you just kill the program.

There was no program using that port, in fact, no other scan says it is open. I ran Trojan Scan at PCFlank and came up clean so I don't think I need to worry yet.
