Ok, So let's go, I am gonna expect this to be a controversal and very exciting and informative thread. I have even emailed PC World about this topic and they said they will have a big topic on it in their March 2006 Issue.
I myself have yet to find out what is The best Protection to use. I will tell you know that I prefer all in one Internet Suites. Here is a list of all the anti virus / Internet Suites that I know off and would like your feedback on as to which is best. If what you use is not listed please respond and tell me why you think it's the best or is great protection. This thread will turn out the best if everyone that reads it participates. Thank You in advance!!

Avg free and Zone alarm does me just fine and has been for years now and still clean as a whistle
" You're only as safe as your last update "

Also Avast Anti virus is another good one
The key is to keep everything up to date!" You're only as safe as your last update "

Perhaps you need qualify your question to be related to the spec of your machine, as posted. Folk with low spec machines, possibly with earlier OS's, would have additional constraints.
For those, ZA is too bloated for words. The now redundant Kerio 2.1.5 is brilliant, if you are happy to spend a fair bit of time in DIY mode getting it right. After that you just forget it.
Similarly bloated Norton products on low spec/pre-XP machines can be a nightmare (if not on all machines).
DerekW

Another little consideration. What if you want to actually remove one of these programs at some stage?
Again ZA and Norton do badly. They leave files and registry entries all over the show, and can mess up the system if you don't follow the exact procedures given on their websites.
DerekW

AVG , Sygate but since norton took it over ?? norton is bloated and impossible to remove and zone alarm is the same

I used Kerio before but i did NOT pass the firewall test at the shields up site
Shields Up
It may of improved since but this was the only reason i switched ," You're only as safe as your last update "

Bob
Surprised to hear that. My ancient Kerio 2.15 passes
"all stealth" just fine (though I did add many more rules, currently 24 blocking). I also got through all tests, including exploits, at PC Flank. Apparently "I don't exist" at the half a dozen test sites I've tried. The only thing they ever find are a few cookies which I always keep (such as this website) and a some trivial details about my system/browser which are of no consequence whatsoever. I could kill those off too but have to suffer Browsing constraints. These apply to about anyone.
DerekW

As far as removing Zone Alarm I use Reg Cleaner to clear out all orphan files
" You're only as safe as your last update "

Thats good Derek, maybe I will try Kerio again and remove the 10mb Zone Alarm
Thanks for the info Derek" You're only as safe as your last update "

NOD32 for antivirus.
Small footprint, low overhead and very good at trapping almost everything.
I've used Norton for over 10 years until I ran into this.

My only word of warning is that you do have to put your back into it for a while (it's a pain for a few weeks). Once you get there it's great.

Well, so far no one has mentioned the use of a router to firewall your machine. D-Link has the best firewall in my opinion.

Good point per. Although I have never had any sort of nasty on this machine (since 1999), I have a distant relative who rightly swears by his router.
His general security measures are much lower than mine but he visits no end of dubious websites. His XP machine also shows as stealthed, as described in my #8, and it keeps clean too.
DerekW

Been stealthed for 8 years. No problems. You might also check out computervitals.com. They have a security forum with a link to most ssecurity sites. ;>)

I agree, the ZoneAlarm security suite is very bloated indeed, I am not at all happy with that program. However despite the negative comments regarding that specific product, you can't find a better firewall that ZoneAlarm. It simply can't be done. It prevents attacks by denying the very existence of the machine, making it invisible to hacker activity. It also prevents malicious programs already installed and running on your machine, from 'calling home'. Some firewalls don't prevent this, and instead of making the computer invisible by not responding at all to pings, they confirm the computers existence, and then simply deny access. This can appeal to a script kiddie or malicious hacker as a challenge.
I would highly suggest using ZoneAlarm as a firewall, they even have a free version that works very well, providing the necessary protection you will need. Hope this helps a little!

Ecoustic
That's called stealthed. I think most Firewalls that are worth their salt should do that. My ancient Kerio 2.15 certainly does.
If you pop back you might be able to do me a favour, as you have a fully stealthed machine (like mine). Can you go to the following website please (with IE set to "Default" security:
Go down to the bottom of the page and see if you can open the link marked "Recovery boot disk creator".
I can only open it if I allow pings, so I wonder if I need a better/different firewall.
Someone has already tried this for me (it was OK) but I'm not sure whether their machine was fully stealthed.Happy for anyone in same situation to try obviously.
Thx and sorry for intruding on this post.
DerekW

AntiVirus: NOD32 and Kaspersky
Firewall: Outpost and ZoneAlarm 2.6 (the last version before it becomes bloated)
