Up until last week I was running Norton Anti-Virus 2002 on my PC, with an expired subscription I might add. Somebody who uses my PC turned Norton off for a few days without me noticing. When I turned it back on, it located the "jeefo" virus--which had infected hundreds of .exe files on my hard drive. The virus is taken care of, but I need advice on anti-virus software, as I am clueless in this area. Should I buy the newwest version of Norton? Should I buy another brand of anti-virus software? Or is there something available as freeware that is effective?

one thing about norton is that it has very poor
memory management. over 4 processes, hogging memory
and bogging down your computer? oh no no no. thats
just too much bs for me, and you.what is use is called Anti-Vir and it is great! it's
very light (which means hardly uses any memory) a
huge update everyweek, and it finds more virus's
faster and more often than norton! it is so good
that when i copied the win98 files to my hdd for
drivers, it found a virus called AT-Partners.dll
but it wasnt the exactfile just a file with the
'script' of the virus. neato eh?
oh yeah, and its freeware.Mr X

a mag i read recommended AVG. wat's cool abt it is it's FREE, with lifetime free updating as well!! (this answers ur query of any freeware .. not really abt how good it is compared to norton).
anyway, i've been using it and i'm totally happy with it. it's free, wat can i complain?
u can let it auto-protect quietly in the background or u can disable the auto startup and do manual scan urself.
last week it detect 10 viruses which norton has failed to detect. both had the latest virus definition file updated.
give it a try at www.grisoft.com

I cant stress enough that AVG 6.0 and Norton online scan & Trend Micro Online scan FAILED to DETECT a TROJAN that was shutting down my AVG 6 midscan.
Trojan Defense Suite 3 Demo correctly flagged and terminated the process including the memory component MSGNET32.PF.
None of the scans picked up either the EXE or the PF.
Computer Kung Fu requires at a minimum visiting
www.grc.com and using all the tools appropriate to your situation there.
Ad Aware,Zone Alarm,SpybotSearch and Destroy
and TDS3 are the MINIMUM products ANYONE should have to reasonably secure their system.

You still need a dedicated virus removal tool. Don't go for Norton 2004 - has still got numerous conflict problems plus they've brought in an XP-style on-line activation system. I think Trend's PC-cillin got the best tested results this month, AVG is free, but has been known to fail. Anti-vir also is good, but not perfect.
"I know that I'm mad - I've always been mad..."

It's possible that the tojan/virus "turned off" your Norton. About 3 years ago a back door trojan totally disabled mine and it was the last time I used Norton. I also found it heavy and conflicting.
AVG is light and gets my vote all the way. I run the free version on two computers and have one purchased Version.
So far have had great success keeping my computers clean with AVG, Spybot, RegSeeker & Toni Arts Easy Cleaner.
It's a good idea to have print outs on what programs you have installed, making it easy to spot self installing intruders for manual removal.
Hope this helps with your decision.

Avast! 4 home is free and has TOTALLY FREE up-dates as you surf and protects all the parts of your PC, e-mail, etc..
I've Used Norton and McAfee (they bog down your PC....we call it bloatware). I also tried AVG 6.0 (free) for 2 yrs untill it quit giving me on-line up-dates. Now I use Avast! and it totally blows away the competition.http://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_protectio.html
If you need a simple solution, try mine. I try to give advise on things that have happened to my PC. Changes in registry can be FATAL! I now have a 95% success rate!

There must have been some reason your AVG updates stopped working. I get "totally free" updates all the time. No virus has hit me since it was installed several years ago.

Looks like I'm alone here, but I've been using eTrust AV for probably 3 years now. NOT free, but I think it's worth the money. I've never had a virus other than Blaster the day it came out. eTrust immediately gave me a warning that the computer had been infiltrated by something, and it quarantined it. Didn't have a name for it, and didn't stop the shutdowns, but it at least recognized a problem where a lot of other AV's didn't.

I'm faithful to AVG because of their superb program and their generosity in helping me escape from Norton when I got hit and Norton failed.
Thank you for info on AVAST4 (sounds good.) I've checked their site and will install it on a friends pc this week. If I have to drive 40 miles because they are experiencing problems, I'll be sure to let a very strong Avast supporter know :)

Norton is useless, i can usually work out when my pc has a virus because Norton shuts down its auto protect and wont let it turn back on, AVG, for me, isnt much better, it found 1 virus trojan thingy (swizzor) when i downloaded it, but since then my comp has been getting worse and worse (im in the process of downloading new graphic drivers as my pc has now decided it cant go above 4 bit colour) spybot also seems to not work very effectively for me.
