In following some instructions in Maximum PC mag to speed up my boot time, I disable some services that resulted in Norton Antivirus, part of Systemworks, to stop autoprotecting, e-mail scanning, and auto-updating. I tried re-installing Norton Systemworks, but that didn't work, so I put all the disabled services back on and then re-installed it per Norton's helpdesk instructions. It still doesn't work. If I check the "Auto Protect" box, it unchecks itself as soon as I hit "OK" and it does not change. It simply won't enable either the e-mail scanning or the auto-update and when I update manually, it won't register the update (still lists the August 13, 2003 date that was the last updated stuff on the CD. I've run through the whole Norton helpdesk gambit and can't find any solutions. Anyone here got any ideas? I can't bring myself to shell out $30 to Norton for fixing a problem. Thanks guys!

If you have "system restore" turned on, try a using "system restore" to a restore point before you made the changes to "speed" things up.
