Recycle bin is corrupt - delete the "RECYCLER" folder on the drive using right-click and SHIFT-delete (or it'll try to put the folder in the recycle-bin!). It's hidden so you'll have to enable "show hidden files and folders" in Explorer's "Folder Options".

Sorry - my omission - I should have told you to untick "Hide protected Operating system files" as well. You'll then see the folder right after "Program Files". Don't left-click on it to select it or it'll open and XP won't allow deletion. Just reboot to recreate it, and you should find Norton will now allow protection and initialise it.

I have fixed this problem using Total Commander in the past. This doesn't use the Explorer interface, so you can see the hidden "Nprotect" folder inside "Recycler". Deleting that folder made Norton recreate it correctly when protection was re-enabled, without a reboot.

As an aside, TC also allows you to see all the garbage left behing in Temporary Internet Files subfolders after you've deleted TIFs using Internet Options, and you can do a proper cleanup in there.

Sorry - missed your reply - open C: in My Computer, or run Explorer. You don't need SW installed - it's the standard recycle bin folder until SW initialises it. You'll see the folder has a recycle bin icon, and XP will warn you it's a system folder when you delete it. Reboot and it'll be recreated, then reinstall SW.
