Norton or free alternatives?

My Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus (both 2004 editions) are set to run out soon.

Should I renew the Norton package (and live with the draining of system resources Norton causes) or get a free alternative?

I am thinking AVG and ZoneAlarm (I already have anti-spyware software - Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware SE Personal).

Any opinions?
Thanks.

If you like Norton keep it. Norton is not my favorite program, but if you liked 2004, I would get their latest version, as it doesn't cost that much more. Lots of places sell Norton cheaper than what Symantec does at their website. AVG is popular, and as you know it is free. It also uses a lot less resources than Norton. Same with Zone Alarm.

Norton Internet security and Norton AV (2005 or 2006, don't remember) came with my Compaq which I got in aug 2006. I could not get the Norton firewall to work properly with my network. Also Norton blocked Avatars in the Yahelite chat client program which I use with Yahoo chat. So I obtained the Norton removal tool and removed it. I then downloaded Zone Alarm and AVG. These work good with my network and Yahelite Avatars.

am in the process of trialling the major Internet Security Suites.

free 2 week or 1 month trials.....

first up, i wouldn't touch Norton.....sorry, just my opinion after years of hearing how it sucks yer system resources.

tried ZoneAlarm ISS 2007.....brilliant ! i have always liked ZoneAlarm.

tried AVG.....the effing Firewall conked out after 4 days and i couldn't get it going again ggrrrrrr. so i ditched that.

then tried McAfee ISS.... one review website gave it THE Gold Medal ahead of Norton ISS 2007, ZoneAlarm, Kaspersky. 2 other websites gave it THE Silver Medal. ya kidding !!!! ggrrrr my free trial of McAfee ISS had its latest virus definitions as at 1999 !! ggrrrr so i went to update the virus defs but i had to REGISTER the FREE trial version. i tried to do so at least 4 times and each time pop-up window just sat there BLANK with nothing happening. one time i left the update/register window sitting there for 3 hours and nothing happened. so the latest virus defs were 1999 !! ya kidding !! ggrrr so i kicked McAfee right off my HDD

THEN i tried the latest Kaspersky ISS 6. AT LAST !! something worthwhile ! am currently running it now and am impressed after 4 days. easssssy setup, it sits quietly in the background, and is renowned for having THE best AntiVirus detection around.

soooo for me right now, its a toss of the coin between ZoneAlarm ISS and Kaspersky ISS. Kas is a bit dearer than ZA.
