I am having MAJOR problems with NIS 2004.

Towards the beginning of the week I was trying to change the firewall settings when it wouldn't let me log in as the supervisor to have the privleges. (There is only one user set up on it so I don't understand why it wasn't already logged into that user account!) Then I kept getting a message saying I should uninstall and reinstall the program. Only one problem, you have to be signed in as a supervisor to uninstall. Somehow I restarted the computer and it was fixed.

Today I turned on my computer and noticed it was loading Parental Controls. When I initially installed NIS 2004 I chose the option to NOT install Parental Controls. After this happened I then couldn't access any of my email or regularly visited websites.

I then attempted to change the preferences and what do you know, again it says I'm not logged into the supervisor to change it. But when I go to User Accounts you can't even click the log in button.

Then I started getting the message saying to uninstall and reinstall. I CAN'T! Again back to the supervisor thing.

Now all NIS says when I open it is "There is a problem with your license for this product" and it says to uninstall and reinstall it.

How do I get this program either off of my computer or get it to function properly? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!

Thank you!

Start in safe mode and click on start/run/type in msconfig/click on startup and uncheck Norton so it doesn't startup when you reboot. Then uninstall. Use the removal tool to make sure you get it all off and then re-install.

I had the same problem with NAV 2002.

I tried your suggestion above and it didn't work. It still says
"A Norton Internet Security account with supervisor access must be logged in to uninstall this product. IF Norton Internet Security is not running click star menu, select Norton Internet Security, and log in. Setup will now exit."

The program still WILL NOT let me log in as a supervisor in order to uninstall. I need this program off of my computer.

Hi abnmdcwife,

I just fixed this problem for a friend who was running NIS 2003 under XP.
What I did was go to Start > Run > msconfig (like Hazleyze was saying), but I went into the "Services" tab (you don't need to be in safe mode, at least I wasn't). I selected "Hide All Microsoft Services" at the bottom, so I could find the Symantec services easily. I unchecked them all and hit "Apply". After rebooting I was able to uninstall NIS using the "Change" button under Add/Remove Programs as normal. Hope that fixes it for you too, that's an annoying bug. Good luck!

Thank you for the post. I followed the the process and was able to uninstall NIS 2004. However, I got another message while reinstalling 'This MSI must be launched through setup.' Don't know what that means for I am in setup!!

Can someone help?

Thanks a lot.

This product is a nightmare! I have spent hours trying to uninstall NIS to no avail. I have tried windows Add/Remove, I have followed all of the steps on Symantecs web site to uninstall NIS 2004 using the RnisUPG.exe utility, I have even had a friend (who incidentally is a Technical Consultant in partnership with Microsoft - we're talking real techie..) go through the registry to manually uninstall all keys. I have followed the suggestions above (in this post) and still can not uninstall. I too get the MSI error when trying to 're-install' over the top (which is another suggestion on symantecs site).

I think my only option now is to flatten the box and stay well clear of this product in the future.

That Pesky Kid, did your friend make a note of all the entries he deleted in the registry?
I have NIS 2004 installed on 2 PCs. Win 98 & XP.
WIN98 PC, I have disabled in msconfig. It still scans every document I open which is very irritating and slow. This PC is not being used on the internet now.
XP I would like to remove and go for something else. I get so many intrusion alerts, that surfing is a nightmare. The ranges don't work and I now probably have too many rules set up in my attempt to stop the attempt notifications. I do say don't notify me but it still does.

After reading all the problems with uninstalling NIS 2004, I think I would have even more problems, so I'm not going to attempt it at the moment.
