Help!
I have Nortons 2001 internet security family edition. It has virus checker and firewall.
After reinstalling it (reformated) I'm getting a headache trying after hours trying to get it to work! I downloaded the latest dat file (there were 2 on the website so i chose the smallest) and it keeps saying update files are corrupt and then when i try running live update it spends ages downloading things and then tells me it couldn't install them (and lists loads of files) it also says it could all be because my software is a beta version (which it isn't)
Any ideas?
Would you recommend;
1. buy a new full version of 2003
2. buy an upgrade
3. Perservere at negligable financial cost (but severe frustration)
4. Give up and go to Macafees site and have a cup of tea!The board members on this website all look very clever to me so i look forward to your help!Pleeeeeeze
Thanks :-)

i disagree. why does bad sectors got to do with norton anti virus lol
the problem might seem related to the program itself
try uninstall the program and reinstall it back and see if there is any new patch for your norton internet security family edition.

i have tones of bad sectors on my hd i partitioned them and brand new...its a lower quality now..but hell it works and i can save up for a new one in the mean time

hi trisha,
uninstall norton using rnav.exe go to the symantec site and download it and then run it. it will uninstall all the files associated with norton anti virus. then reinstall it if you wish.
i would recommend nod32 anti-virus its rated no.1 see wilders.org as for your norton firewall ditch it. it has a large footprint as is the norton anti-virus. get a free copy of any of these fine free firewalls such as:
kerio, sygate, outpost, zone alarm- they are better.
for more info on firewalls go to www.thepublicworks.com security section and link up and read info on firewalls such as firewall guide, security dogs, firewall net etc.
all the best,
murve

i wa gonna say somethignn about it
but i waited to see what other people had to say about sound fsfdsf is just wrong !

Ryan,
thanks for the suggestion, I have uninstalled/reinstalled several times and unfortunately this doesn't help.Murve I am going to try your suggestion of rnav.exe because it sounds like it is more thorough. I'll try the sites for the firewalls too. That will be really useful cos I haven't really got any idea how a firewall works and its about time I learnt!
Is Nod32 easy to update? I always tended to go for names like Nortons and Mcafees because they were big and well known (mind you so was the Titanic Lol) but if there are alternatives (especially cheaper) I'm happy to try them.
thanks everyone for the quick replies!
God bless you
TrishaP.S: on the subject of bad sectors I think my hardrive is ok but there's a big Yellow exclamation mark next to SYSTEM BOARD EXTENSION FOR ACPI BIOS in the sytem/device manager window. is this bad??? (if yes...please be gentle!)

Trisha98...
It's not that Norton Antivirus is a bad product, it's just bundled with some other Norton programs that are not very good...
We support a LOT of computers running various versions of Norton Antivirus...they are not perfect, but then NO antivirus product is...BUT on the down side, most Norton products are "resource hogs", and sometimes tends to slow your computer down...
Norton's Internet Security is probably the, or one of the lowest rated firewalls available...
Sometimes removing any of the Norton products can be a real problem if you are haveing problems...sometimes when you cannot do an "uninstall" you need to delete the folders then delete all the stuff in the registry...and if you don't know what you are doing in the registry, stay out...
Norton has several removal tools when you are having problems, but none of those removal tools will remove everyting associated with any particular Norton program...
Bad sectors is not the problem...but for some reason, you got a bad install...it seems to happen with Norton products every now and then...try the rnav.exe from Norton and see if it gets it out...
I have no problem staying with Norton Antivirus...and getting a copy of Norton Antivirus 2003, which will unintall the OLD antivirus before it will install the new 2003 usually works...
Then I suggest you get one of the firewalls that Murve talks about...they are all good...
And I would STAY AWAY from Norton Internet Security and Norton Firewall products...those 2 are "substandard"...
Hope this helps
Steve

hi trisha,
nod32 is easy to update, but you may find
it a bit more expensive than norton, so if
you are looking for a good sound
anti-virus that's free try AVG. it has gotten
good reviews, as for your motherboard,
you may need to flash (update your bios),
you should check with the manufacturer
of your motherboard to see if there are
any updates or any info on problems with
that particular mb. possibly someone in
this forum will shed some light
concerning this issue.
hope this helps,
murve

Steve and Murve,
thanks for all your help and suggestions.
I've downloaded Sygate and am running it even though I'm completely clueless as to what on earth its doing...but I will teach myself as it gives loads of info..
:-)Regarding the Nortons probelms, I tried running Rnav and that didn't help. Have installed and uninstalled countless times. It still says update list corrupt when i run updates :-(
Bearing in mind I have internet security 2001 would buying the nortons antivirus 2003 update work? Will it just update the antivirus "part" of my software or should I just try and install the antivirus part on its own first from my CD (which looks possible) and then update with 2003 Antivirus?
hope that makes sense!!
thanks!
Trisha

Hi again, (later on the same day)
Just reinstalled the "Nortons antivirus 2001" part of my software and it ran updates ok.
It says its fully updated now which is brill. The only thing that puzzles me is I'm only sposed to have 6 days left on my subscription and yet I have 357 according to the program.
Guess I've been given a free gift?
Thanks again.Oh and one more thing;
Murve, do you block windows/system/RPCSS.exe using your firewall on your computer? I've been reading up on the program and it sounds a bit dubious.Happy weekend :-)
Trisha

hi trish,
if i'm not mistaken, RPCSS.exe , is a file used by symantec in their pcanywhere software, and or microsoft for their messenger or networking software, to report back (broadcast) to their respective websites. i would rename that file, and not delete it. call it rpcss.bak if you wish. that will stop it from broadcasting.
hope this helps,
murve
