I had just gotten done removing a diskfull of viruses, spyware, and trojans from my son's computer (note to self: Sell kid to gypsies if he lets one of his friends use his PC again - or that kid back in our house) and went over to my machine to check my email. It suddenly popped up with a Norton alert about a file "mc23.tmp" infected with the backdoor.graybird trojan. I thought my son's "friend" had gotten on my machine, too. However I came up clean on all AVS and ASW scans with several products so I started looking on the web for information on this.

Symantec's website gave me the lowdown on backdoor.graybird and its varients but I found none of the traces in my registry. I kept getting the Norton warning popup every few minutes though so I was afraid I might have some new virus based on it. But after a lot of searching I found a message on another forum saying that it was a bug in the latest Norton definitions (and a few other AVS products were affected, too), was actually pinging on a temporary file created by Spysweeper, and that Symantec was working on a fix. Lo and behold when I updated my definitions this morning the popup message disappeared and hasn't been seen since.

It's getting too crazy when your AVS is detecting your ASW as a trojan.

Just a suggestion. Why not d/l
Avast! 4 home edition
and do a scan
Make sure you totally turn off your other AV while doing this. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised at what Avast! will find...Good Luck

I've taken off lots of Norton products on client PC's and installed Avast! which was easier on the resources and also gives on-line up-dates as you surf the net...

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Ever consider setting up user accounts with less permissions for your son and friends and keeping yours locked?

Actually, the only thing I can say is to completely shut down AVG when installing and running Avast!
I have installed Avast on a PC running AVG and there was no problem. Just remember, you CANNOT run them both at the same time, they will clash.
After running Avast! I chose between which AV's I was gonna u8se and uninstalled the other. Hope that helped you

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

I have half a dozen PCs networked at home and I get Norton CE for free through my company, w/customer support and no annual fees. Can't argue with that. This is the only problem I've had with the program since I installed it 5 years ago.

Hi XpUser4Real!!
When you say "completely shutdown AVG", do you mean
"Right click AVG icon -> Quit AVG Control Centre ??

Or something more than that??

What you might also do is go into the Norton Control Center and disable, "Load on Startup". Then when you reboot there'll be no traces of Norton in active memory and Avante can become your "default" AVS while you're testing it.
