Hi, All.

Relatives of mine bought a new computer which had Norton Antivirus installed and have recently renewed the $70.00 subscription. However, they are continually getting pop-up messages saying that their subscription has expired.

They have had an Online chat with someone from Symantec and did everything that was suggested, but the messages keep coming.
What is their next move?

If that was me, I would ask for a refund from Norton (Good Luck because they are like your worst nightmare)
If they could get a refund, I would suggest using the Norton uninstaller from the Norton website and cleaning out ALL instances of Norton...if you don't...no other AV will work properly.
They can try that first and then try re-installing Norton and it should work properly.
I've personally uninstalled many Nortons from clients machines and replaced it with either Avast Free or AVG plus the free Comodo Pro firewall and they have never looked back. Why pay $70 when you can have it all for free and not as much of a resource HOG as Norton.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Just to illustrate how bad a recent NAV update was - it has screwed up one million Chinese computers. Guess what's Symantec reaction? Read THIS.

You'll be doing your relatives a huge, huge favor in advising them to take the monetary loss and dump Norton.
What a damn shame they already paid for a renewal.... Hope you can get a refund for them; good luck.

Just for ha-ha's, do a google search for "Norton problems"; or similar wording.... Such a shame that uninformed people purchase that garbage. It has been said many times that Norton is as bloated and buggy as a beached whale; probably even worse than that too....

The above elicited some mixed feelings with me. On the one hand I don't see myself going back to Norton because it's very hard to forget their past despite my having moved on much like many other old time Norton users.

On the other hand, much recent releases from the Symantec stable like Norton 360, its intuitive & significant lightness on system resources sharply contradicts the resounding "bloated and buggy" allegation still making the rounds.

They seem to be on an uphill mission with that software to change the institutionalized opinions about their software one person at a time & surprisingly they are making some steady progress in that regard. But it remains to be seen how significant or just how many of their determined defectors (like myself) they can win back to their fold.

They are not yet where they once were & I doubt they'll ever get back to the old glory but they are far from where they used to be.

On a side note, has anyone here tried Spyware Terminator - I am thinking about dumping Ad-Aware & Spybot combo for just this one program - Thanks all.

I've used Spyware Terminator for awhile now and it seems to pick up quite a bit of stuff. The only thing I don't like is that it wants to control other programs and keeps prompting you somewhat like a firewall does. A bit of a pain.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks
