i think I have a virus. My norton antivirus quit working and when I go to symantec.com I try to use their safe checker program and I get booted off the net. (My puter goes back to my desktop, I don't actually get disconnected from the net.) I tried reloading norton with the disc that came with my gateway but it won't reinstall it. any help?????

Do you have your Norton recovery discs? The virus has attacked your antivirus software, which is why you are unable to do what you have tried. Have you tried to use other online antivirus scans and repair tools like Trend's Housecall, or Panda's scan tools?

Open a DOS windows and do the following command: ATTRIB /S WINK*.* if it finds any files, then you are infected with the Klez virus. First step is to find and delete these. They AV sites have special tools you can download and run for removing this virus.

I could E-mail you the AVG antivirus prog. The problems would be - it possibly will not detect the virus because that was there first, and secondly I don't want you to have my E-mail address. Nothing personal, but I am allergic to computer Viruses. Have you a friend that could download this or another online type AV program and save it to a disc for loading ? If it cleaned your PC enough for you to re-install Norton it may be a start. The virus may not be able to mess with a non-Norton prog. If this is nonsense I will go back to sleep.
