OS: Windows 2000 Professional
CPU/Ram: Not sure
Product: IBM
Comment:

I tried to instal Norton antivirus and the installation failed.

I got the following error "set up was unable to update msi component, please contact microsoft".

Also, I don't know if this is related to the above, but I also regularly get a pop up saying that my registry is corrupted and that I should download registry cleaner.

Would someone be able to help me understand what I have to do?

Thank you!

Salsa.

Hello Salsa,
The msi components are a part of Windows itself... generally used by Windows to control if your computer is safe with your firewall and anti-virus program. The problem related in your case can have many reason:
1) are you trying to install the original copy of this anti-virus or a copy ?
2) did you install a correct copy of theis anti-virus appropriate to the Windows 2000 version running on your computer ?
Only solution available to correct this problem is:
1) uninstall completely the copy of the anti-virus by the panel control, then the program " add & remove programs " you will find it on the list, uninstall all components named with Norton or Symantec.
You will need to reboot your computer after this action.
2) Use the program " MSconfig" on start, then " run ", be very careful with this program because any action is definitive and any mistake is fatal !!!
Just use the " restore " option, ask the program to reinstall originals drivers 1 day or 2 before the problem occured, this action will clean all your system register to come back to a clean system you had before. As soon as you made it, you need to reboot the computer to come back to your windows desktop. You should recover all your function as before.
3) I'd suggest you buy a copy of this wonderful anti-virus nammed Kaspersky anti-virus 6.00.303, the best in the world actually, the only one to be able to detect unknown virus when they just pick up into your system..... watch this program on Kaspersky web site......
Good luck

Imp,
Windows 2000 don't have system restore. But the uninstall should work.

Thanks Imp and Dawgfan1785!

So if I can't do system restore, what are my other options?

The Norton antivirus I tried to install is the free one that Rogers now offers when you get their high speed internet. Even the technical support folk said it was a problem with my computer.

Please advise, and thanks again!

Problem fixed: A friend that works in tech support told me to download windows updates. That did the trick. I was then able to install Norton. Thanks all, Salsa.

On what planet? For someone who knows so little, why do you post so much?

MSI Yes, the (well known) Windows Installer
