Well, by using uninstall and brute force,
I've got rid of all the NAV I can find.
(We want to re-install.) However, there are some scriptblock .dll files under programmes/common/symantec. They cannot be removed, the dialogue box says.
Might they prevent NAV from re-installing over top?
If they can be removed (renaming, DOS, or other method), might that gum up what ever other files they might be linking with?I'm just going to try to re-install, but I
would appreciate any comments from anyone
more savvy on these matters than myself.
Thanks.
d

Go to the Symantec website and get their removal tool RNAV.exe. After you use it you shoud have no problem installing your new Norton anitivirus program. Take care and all the best!

Thanks, capt..
RNAV.exe did the trick..sort of. It did finally delete NAV, and allowed us to re-install the Internet Secuirity suite 2002 from our CD. However: after configuring the new suite we booted, and got a bloody RED alert screen, saying that:
UNABLE TO INITIALIZE THE VIRUS SCANNING ENGINE DATA FILES.The conmputer stopped dead with that, and could only be powered off with brute force, and then it went to safe mode. We tried to restore the system to an earlier date, but it rebooted to the red alert, back to safe mode... and so on. Finally, I got going in safe mode and removed NAV (or most of it) using the file manager. Now we're up and running again, with the Norton suite MINUS AntiVirus.... again.
In summary, if Norton AntiVirus IS deleted, it can't be successfully reinstalled. When installed, it won't run, and renders the computer unuseable.Norton may have an effective product as regards its function when it's running. However, Norton is so awkward, troublesome, and difficult to install and uninstall, that no-one who is not at least an amateur computer technician should use the software. It's just too badly put together and unwieldly.
Now we have no NAV, but of course LiveUpdate thinks it is still there, so we have no virus protection. We paid $30 U.S. for an update which we can't use. I am going to get AVG or NOD32, and see if it can run alongside the Norton firewall. In a year, the Norton Firewall will expire, and then we'll DUMP NORTON ALTOGETHER. If you aren't very computer savvy, AVOID NORTON.

Sorry to hear that you continue to have NAV problems. I would contact Symantec and get their techs to assist you. If you still have no joy, you can use their satisfaction guaranteed policy to get a refund. Symantec really does back up their product with probably the best refund policy around. I was amazed when my dealer would not help me with a refund for Systemworks, because I had thrown the box away. I went to Symantec and they processed the refund within two weeks, and they did not even want the cd back.

I had a simular problem when uninstalling and installing Norton Anti-Virus. I found the fix that worked for me was to make sure you delete the virus definition folder, after uninstalling Norotn thru the Add/Remove programs in the Windows control panel,I went to the virus definition folder thru Windows Explorer and manually deleted it from there. I then installed Norton and the error ws gone ,went to live update a couple of times , till it said my computer was up to date ! Good Luck ,Nick

I'm having the same problems that doghead described. Norton Antivirus is not installed under the Norton Systemworks 2003, and I can't seem to get it installed without a lot of problems to my system.
I'm wondering if doghead was able to get the Antivirus program installed using Nick Ritchie's tips. Call me crazy, but I'm hesitiant to keep going through the mess of trying to fix the solutions, which have seemed to lead to more problems. I'm thinking of leaving Systemworks 2003 as it is currently, and trying McAfee's antivirus.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
