Norton 360 new install

June 23, 2009 at 11:25:01
Specs: Windows Vista

I installed Norton 360 on a brand new HP laptop with VIsta. The laptop had a desktop icon to get Norton but I had already purchased a hard copy. Early in install the message comes up that Norton 360 has detected another version of Norton and will uninstall it. After a few seconds the msessage comes up that it is done with uninstall and you must reboot to continue with Norton 360 install. After rebooting the icon for purchasing Norton is gone and it goes to the install screen again but it says again that a preveious version is there and it will uninstall. After which it says you must reboot and the loop begins. You have the option to reboot later and use the laptop but after each reboot we go through this same routine and meanwhile Norton 360 is not installed. I tried to remove the previous version manually through add/remove but it is no longer listed.

Does it give you the opportunity to cancel the installation? If it does skip to Step 2.

Step 1 - Start >> In the Start Search field box type: msconfig <enter>

When the configuration menu opens click on the startup (tab). Look thorugh the list of startup items and find the nortons/symantec installer and disable it. Click Apply and OK .. will be prompted to reboot your computer. Do so.

Step 2 - Now download/run the Nortons Removal Tool:

Reboot your computer and now try the Norton Installation.

The uninstall for Norton 360 did not work however the uninstall fro Norton 2009 DID work - Thanks for the info.
It appears that while I was trying to install Norton 360 the product that HP packaged with the PC was Nortorn 2009 and apparently that was where the problem originated.
Thanks Again
