My subscription to NortonAV 2003 is just about to expire. I can renew it for £17 (without technical support) or I can get NAV 2005 upgrade for £20. I'm not a fan of newer versions of Norton having seen lots of installation problems etc. but has anyone used the 2005 upgrade & have they encountered any problems? Thanks in advance also, but I don't want a 'my AV is best' discussion as I use other AVs on different machines I just want to know if the upgrade can go smoothly.

Just like MicroShaft, each new version sux more power by adding another ton of junk to your system.

If you haven't had any problems with 2003, keep it.

Personally, I'm still on 2002 and will keep it until it no longer updates.

Find alternative ways of getting it. And don't install everything. Do a custom install it is not hard.

Most of the new things in Norton are the things you don;t want stuffing up the system. Like Password manager.

If it is starting to many things in background use msconfig in the run box then click startup and disable all the things you don't want.

Based on your computer's spec, yes... Norton's should work fine for you. Just be sure to uninstall the old version before installing the new one.

The advantage to getting new versions each year is that you get an upgraded virus engine as well as updated signatures. The new versions will slow your machine down a bit, but from personal experience, 2002/3/4 WILL miss viruses that 2005 picks up.

On top of that, you get a $xx mail-in rebate for you previous version that will make it about $5 off from getting only a subscription renewal.

I'm running 98SE. I started getting a message saying 2005 had encountered an internal error and had to be uninstalled. I followed the links to the Symantec website and printed all instructions before removing. Add/Remove did not work, so I had to download SymNRT and run. When I reinstalled following their instructions, I kept getting an error message "Cannot find C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec\Shared\ccSetMgr.exe (or one of its components. I went to the Symantec website and found this message. The "fix" was exactly everything I had already done.

Nevertheless, I re-ran entire process again, same error. Called "GeekbyMinute" and probably spent $40-$50 ending up with the same result.

We're both scratching our "___" (you fill in the blank). Any help out there?
