Hi Guys, need help as I can't figure it out.
Here's the facts: 60 computers network running WIN2k and WIN98. Norton Anti-Virus 2004 installed on each PCs.
In the last few days, 3 PCs have been unable to activate Norton Auto-Protect feature. Also the E-Mail analysis is in error. The problem did not appear simultaneously. One PC per day has seen the problem appear.
I tried uninstalling and re-installing but it didn't work as the problem reappeared on the next day. The on-line scan on Symantec's site does not detect anything. In the administration tools/services, auto-protect appears as enabled and starts up automatically (NOT!!).
Is it a virus ?(I think so although I haven't found anything surfing the web that describes my problem).
If anyone has anything to suggest, I'd appreciate since the problem seems to be spreading and I got a major headache...

I would expect the online virus signature data base to be the same as your installed program. I would suggest you try an online scan from another vendor.....

You could also try a different approach.....
an AV that runs in DOS (f-prot). This would be OK for the Win 98 PC's. It may find something that the others missed.
Win 2000 is NTFS (I think) and F-Prot will not work on those machines.http://www.f-prot.com
The DOS version is free and found a text file on my PC that had weird suspect chactors in it.

Well, I was kinda hoping to fix Norton, not eliminate it ... Since we're migrating soon, to Netware 6.5 and XP workstations, it is not in our plans to change the Anti-virus software (+ I don't have the last word). Any other ideas ?

You don't have to uninstall Norton, I have F-prot on my PC AND Norton. I disable Norton then run F-Prot.
F-prot does not have to be installed either, you just copy the files into a folder on your desktop, use the left mouse key to start the prog (F-PROT.EXE) then use the keyboard arrows and the enter key to select what you want to scan (local hard discs). F-Prot for DOS is free and so are the updates. It does not run in the background like Norton does, you have to start the scan manually. The DOS version can't replace Norton but it's good to scan for a second opinion. Go for it (and post back).

Ah! Ok, I'm gonna try F-Prot for the one Win98 PC and keep looking for a solution for the Win2K... I'll keep you posted. Thanks

Coindicentally I had same error: all of a sudden the Norton Antivirus 2004 button in the taskbar had disappeared. When launching NAV auto-protect was disabled and E-mail scan stopped. Unstalling - re-installing did not solve the problem. What I did is had a complete fresh install (!) of Windows XP (SP1) on a formatted partition. I am always following a very strict pattern of installing the applications. Somewhere halfway I install NAV (into an empty directory), get all the updates from their site, etc.
I installed a number of other applications, nothing special and stuff that I am always using. Somewhere at the end, after a reboot, again NAV had disappeared! Uninstalling and re-installing did not help. I could scan my HD, no viruses.
1. Am using Sygate Firewall (NAV is allowed).
2. Checked Symantec:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2003091710234206?Open&src=&docid=1997121131456&nsf=nav.nsf&view=pfdocs&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=
In MSCONFIG: services are runningI may tag auto-protect, but it remains disabled.
Now, THIS is peculiar eh ..?
I am using a 'fixed set' of applications with which NAV has always been working perfectly sofar... i.e. no weird application that might interfere.Spybot Search&Destroy comes up with nothing, only with DSO Exploit.

I manually updated the reg.key.
That aside, this all beats me ...

In some cases this problem can be caused by a timing conflict between another program or driver loading on start up and the main Norton AntiVirus host file ccApp.exe. Do the following to remove ccApp.exe from the Windows run line and then add the program to the Windows Startup folder so that the application loads later in the Windows boot order.
----------------------
On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
At the Run dialog box, type regedit and then click OK.
When the Registry Editor opens, navigate to and select the following key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
In the right pane, click ccApp in the list of applications.
Press Delete.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click Registry > Exit.To add ccApp.exe to the Windows Startup folder
Exit all running programs.
Right-click Start, then click Open, or Open All users.
Double-click the Programs folder.
Double-click the StartUp folder.
Right-click in an empty area of the window, point to New, then click Shortcut.
Browse to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.
Click the ccApp.exe file.
Click OK.
Click Next, then click Finish.
Restart the computer to allow ccApp.exe to load from the StartUp folder.

I had exactly the same problem, but mine seemed to be caused by a clash between NAV and BlackIce. To fix it, I set BlackIce to 'install mode', ran NAV LIVEUPDATE.
NAV then came back as normal, with AUTOPROTECT and EMAIL scanning both on. Prior to this I'd run various virus checks, including FPROT from a DOS boot disk, but these found nothing, so I don't think it's a virus. Most likely a clash with something else you've got running....
