I am current on my Norton Antivirus 2001 defs and all, but I only have about 10 days left on my subscription. I haven't ever messed with installing or uninstalling Norton's antivirus before. I first want to know if I can just do an upgrade with out running into problems?

I also need to know exactly how to uninstall the 2001 program if it needs to be uninstalled before upgrading.

Also is it better to upgrade or to buy the CD itself?

Thanks

Via the CD is the easiest way - it will automatically recognise your former edition and do whatever is required to install the newer! However, Norton 2004 has caused a number of problems for some users concerning registration and running liveupdate for example. 2003 is available on sites such as eBay for small sums and does not exhibit such difficulties as far as I am aware.

Are you also aware that it remains possible to download the latest Norton anti virus definitions even though your sub has expired? It is necessary to do it manually and on a 56k modem takes about 18 mins to download each time. The drawback is that it is necessary to check each day for updates at the Symantec site - many users do this anyway, since "Liveupdate" can run as much as 3/4 days behind actual definition availability.

Tammy1949, I would shop around for a NAV 2003 cd. I bought one several months ago for a friend that likes Norton, here in Canada for $14 Canadian. I had NAV2004, but I could no stand the long startup times(AMDXP2500cpu/512RAM), and I quit using it. I went back to 2003. I never tried it on my older computers that have a lot less resources. It is supposed to have an antispyware feature and I have no idea if it works, because Adaware and Spybot still found their normal findings. I always uninstall, and then do a new installation with Norton. I have had to use Symantec's removal tool for a friend that had a Norton installion problem(rnav.2003). The other antivirus software that I use is ETrust from Computer Associates. It works great on my really old computer(Pentium pro/128RAM). You can get it for a free one year trial. You can find the link for it by using Windows Update. You will see the green box 123 protect your pc and in step one or three you will see the Computer Associates link for the one year offer. Computer Associates update the virus definitions almost every day and its scanning time is very fast. I have installed it on my childrens computers, and my old systems and have never had a problem or a virus get through it. The firewall is from Zone Alarm.

First of all as far as updating

(Quote)"Are you also aware that it remains possible to download the latest Norton anti virus definitions even though your sub has expired?"

Well, I did run across this site today,
http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/4520-7297_16-4207821.html
and says "Customers who are comfortable running, say, SystemWorks 2001, must now upgrade to SystemWorks 2003".

So, I guess this is what I am running since I installed Norton from a disk and so now renewing is out of the question. There wasn't even an option in my subscription at Symantec to renew, only to upgrade. I didn't try the upgrade because I had forgot to mention, that a few months back I had a macro virus. I had Norton's delete it. Then I had gotten a couple of notices that the virus was in my recycle bin. So I emptied the folder. Now a lot of times I get this error message on Windows startup "NPROTECT has caused an error in unknown".

I have no idea as how to fix it. I don't know that much about computers. With help from this site I have done a reformat and reinstall on my son's windows 95 computer but has never been connected to the internet. So with good step by step instructions I think I can figure this out to.

1) Should I get this NPROTECT error fixed before purchasing the CD program, or will it matter? Also I will need help with fixing it if it does need to be fixed.

2) Should I go with the Symantec upgrade (what version is the upgrane)or just get the 2003 disk and install it myself?

3)Do I need a special uninstall tool to uninstall Norton's Antivirus and the Utility 2001 program. If not, is there anything I need to do or know about before installing the new program?

4) I have ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and SpywareBlaster running. Is there anything special, like shutting them down or ?? before uninstalling and installing the new Norton's Utility and Antivirus program?

If anyone has answers oe sugestions to these questions please give me simple set by step instructions.

Thanks very much. I am totally grateful for this forum and all the people whom are willing to help those of us who don't have the knowlege to help ourselves!!!

From what I understand you have Systemworks pro 2001 installed, which includes NAV2001. How long has you been getting the NPROTECT error? How do you correct it, so Norton is working? Since you seem to really like Norton I suggest you get a 2003 Norton Antivirus cd. I would not get Systemworks. Check in the add/remove programs to see what version of liveupdate you have. It should be version 2.0. If you do not have it, download it from the Symantec website, it is listed under downloads. It will automatically upgrade your previous version. Leave it installed, so your new installation will be able to use it. Another item to check in the control panel is the liveupdate icon. Check to see what download setting is selected. I prefer the express setting. With interpersonal you have to remember to manually run liveupdate to get some components. A lot of people do not seem to know about this setting, so be sure to check it. I would uninstall all of Systemworks. During the uninstalling process of Norton antivirus you will be prompted to delete anything that might be in quarantine, if you have not already deleted those items. Hopefully you will not need the Symantec removal tools, and your new installation from the cd will be smooth sailing. If you need the removal tools they are "symclean" for systemworks and rnav.2003 for the antivirus. Symantec suggests that you try uninstalling before you use the tools, but they can be used if you cannot use the normal unistalling steps.

Tammy1949, I found Systemworks2003 at Newegg for $19.95, which includes free FEDEX shipping. You can browse the cd and install what programs you like. Newegg is about the best rated company there is at ressellerratings.com Go to

1. The updates are available at the Norton site
www.symantec.com
and click on "Security Response" (in the top bar)
Click on "Downloads" in the new window (at the left hand side)
Click on "Virus Definition Updates" in the new window (at the left hand side)
2. Scroll down to the label
"Download Virus Definitions (Intelligent Updater Only)" and click on it
3. Scroll down to the label
"English"
and click on "Download Updates" next to it
4. You will see headings "File Name", "Ceation Date", "Release Date" and "File size"
5. Click on the file under "File Name " - it is in blue type and will end in ........i32.exe
6. You will be asked if you want to "Open", "Save" etc
7. Select "Open" and the file will download and then ask if you want to update your virus files: click "Yes" and it will!!!

www.majorgeeks.com
also have the latest definitions for dowloading

You can do this regardless of what version of Norton you have.

To upgrade to a more recent version completely, get the CD and insert it (!!). It will automatically search for other versions and ask if you want to unistall the old and install the new - click "Yes"

Probably a good idea to turn off the existing version of anti virus while you put in the disk.

Remember that you will have to connect to the internet and update the definition files etc immediately

Your new subscription will start at the point from which you update the definition files.

Any problems, post back!

Ray,

While you can download the updates NAV will not update itself if the subscription is expired. Your subscription service has to be current regardless of how you obtain the update in order for them to work.

My subscription still has at least a week left before it expires.

My NPROTECT error (I had forgot to mention, that a FEW MONTHS back I had a macro virus), Shortly after that the error started. I don't get the warning at every startup though. I have also gotten notices every now and then that I have hard disk failure, but that has gone on every now and then since the virus too. I have to do a Norton speed disk every week or my internet starts freezing up. But my computer is still working. Norton's System Doctor warning box is almost always red. Just a few days ago it was green and stayed green for almost 3 days, which blew my mind because it usually is only green once in a week or so and It turns back to red when I do a reboot.

Norton System Works 2001
In Norton's Help, it list the
Norton Utilities version 2001
Norton System Doctor 5.02.32
System Info
Operating system Windows Millennium 4.90.3000
Total Physical memory 392708 KB
Availible Physical memory 79788 KB
Swap file utilization 11%
Available disk space 23576 MB (C)

Well I am heading to bed. I will check back tomorrow afternoon for any more comments made to me
