For some reason NOrtan Antivirus 2003 makes my computer really slow. I uninstall it and reinstall it and then i goes alright. but when i update it i can't really do anything. Then i cut off the auto protect it will go a whole lot faster. Is there a way to have auto protect on and still have the a fast pc?

Hi there, to be honest, Norton is a resource hog. Norton 2004 seems to be worse by the accounts I've read. You also have Windows XP, which a lot of folks would say needs 256Mb of RAM to run optimally.
Windows XP coupled with Norton Antivirus is a RAM killer. You should consider going up to 512 and more if you can afford to. Now, are you on dial-up? If so, it would explain you not being able to do anything else while downloading updates.
It's hard to do anything else when you are downloading using dial-up. Other than these two points, I don't know what else may be causing the slowdown. You have a good enough processor, but your memory count is lacking a little.

blondekneegrow, Many others are having the problem and it's due to the latest update and an expired VeriSign security certificate. Below is a link with Norton's recommended Temporary Fix.
