Comment:

A CD that came with my new Verizon phone installed spyware on my computer - the file noptify.exe keeps trying to access the Internet. I cannot locate the file to delete it and Verizon is no help as they plead ingnorance. Neither Ad-Aware nor SpyBot recognize it. Has anybody else had any experience with this spyware? Any help to get it removed?

Thanks, Kid. Actually, I googled "noptify.exe" & "noptify" before posting my question. I did not find any help on how to remove it.
So my question stands ... how can I rid my computer of this noptify.exe file?

Try the basics. Start in safemode. Make sure you can view hidden files. Search for Noptify and Verizon. Search for all files created on the date you put the cd in. Delete any files you find that might be the malware (leave them in the recycle bin if you are not sure). Post back any specific files you are not sure you should delete.

Also, use regedit and search the registry for the same. Carefully delete any matching entries.

You could also download regcleaner and see what programs appear. If you find noptify or anything verizon, you can remove them with regcleaner.

Thanks for the warning about the Verizon cd. I am replacing a dead phone soon and probably would have looked at the cd out of curiosity. After reading all the other posts from the link above...

efabes, thanks a lot. I just needed to be pointed in the right direction. The noptify file was hidden. Don't know why I didn't think of that myself. Anyway, I deleted it and I should know if my problem has been solved soon.
I still don't know why Ad-Aware and SpyBot don't recognize the noptify file. Apparently this thing has been around for years.

I had the same happen just today (sep 15). I can find the file in local settings>temp but access to it is denied. I removed the cd but that did not help. My firewall blocks it from accessing the internet now, but how do I remove this meanie?

Thanks

Oh don't bother...I tried to delete it with r-clicking which gave me that message. But then I just dragged the file to the recycling bin and it was just as easy as that. %$#@+&^

Exactly the same exprience today with the intolerable CD which came with a lovely new Verizon phone.

It repeatedly tried to connect to the internet but Zone Alarm stopped it, the "Find" function of Windows 98 located it in Windows/Temp and Uninstaller deleted it. It had not shown up on SpyBot for me, either.

So far so good.

Best wishes,

I got the same warning from Norton Internet Security about noptify.exe from the Verizon Wireless CD. f8ck em.

Search for hidden files "noptify.exe"
then CTRL ALT DEL and stop the process called "noptify.exe"
Then you can delete it.

I used the CD too, and my firewall also stopped it. My copy was found at:
c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp\Noptify.exe
You should be able to can it from there if you haven't already canned the registry entry. My registry read like this in RunOnce:
[VNoptify]
C:\DOCUME~1\<username>\LOCALS~1\Temp\Noptify.exe http://tracker.zgate.com/cdtracker.cfm?strCDID=2D9A702D-4F36-43A6-B7C4-7A90E9F92D30&strViewType=off

Hope this is of some help to everybody.
