Comment:

I am using Norton Internet Security 2005 and recently noticed that it does not work in safe mode for either 98se or XPpro?

I like to run my virus scan in safe mode since it picks up items that it would not in standard mode.

I contacted Norton about this issue over a week ago and they instructed me to reinstall on both windows versions (which I have done twice for each one), but it still will not open in safe mode for either?

Anyone else have a similar problem or can anyone tell me something to do that Symantec has not all ready described?

Thank You

recognized with older versions, so it didn't work, then after updating it did, try updating definitions as well, also try other scanners like solo demo for now, and adawareSE in safe mode, and empty temp folders, ...:)

NOT SURE WHAT YOUR RESPONSE IS ABOUT. I did updates for Internet Security after I put the program on each windows version.

I did not try other programs in safe mode. I guess I could try that now.

Ok, I tried Ad-aware and SpyBot in safe mode and both searches came up with nothing.

Norton Internet Security still does not open.

Any more suggestions?

Quoted from this symantec KB:

Safe mode is the Windows diagnostics mode. When you start the computer in Safe mode, only the specific components that are needed to run the operating system are loaded. Safe mode does not allow some functions, such as connection to the Internet. It also does not load all drivers for all software programs including drivers for some of the NAV program features, including Activity Log, Auto-Protect and Email Scanning. Because of that, these features do not function in Safe mode.

NOTE: You can run a manual virus scan in Safe mode. However, if NAV repairs a virus, the scan activity and virus repair results will not be added to the NAV Activity Log.

XpUser, I must disagree with your response. I have used Norton products for over ten years now and have always been able to open them up in safe mode and run them.

I have found many virus' that I could not in standard mode.

Are you new to computers?

Sure I am the one with the problem, but at least I have ten years of experience rather than two days. Anyone and Everyone that logs on this site can determine your reply.

Safe mode is the diagnostic mode of Windows. When you start the computer in Safe mode, only the specific components that are needed to run the operating system are loaded. The components needed to start Norton AntiVirus are not loaded. Therefore, (Due to the nature of Safe mode in Windows XP)Norton AntiVirus will not run in Safe mode.
