Please accept my apologies. I did not know the posting rules before. I'm new here and I need help.

I was running the Adaware program and my system went to blue screen. Since then, I have no icons or start menu, just the background screen. I can only access items through the windows task mngr (ctrl+alt+delete). My system was previously running slow with many pop ups. Thank you!

Have you tried tapping F8 on bootup and getting into safe mode?
Once in safemode do a system restore back to when things were fine.
If that doesn't work, then (providing you have high speed connection) tap F8 and go in to safe mode with networking on the next reboot....

Lots of good free cleaners and spyware progs in my link that you should use to clean out your pc. I would start with Ccleaner, then run the others.
Let us know how you make out, thanks

Thanks for your help. I actually went into Safe mode and tried system restore and it still did not work. I had tried Spyware blaster, Norton, and Adaware. When I ran Adaware, it detected numerous items but when I attempted to remove them, my system locked up and went to blue screen. Since then, I've had no start menu or icons, and the cleaners has detected nothing.

Any other advice? I appreciate your help!

Thank you for your reply!

I took all evening and ran all of the cleaners listed on the site, following your directions. Here's what happened:
-Spyware blaster kept saying 0 items have protection disabled, no matter what I did
-Spybot, when I tried to "immunize", my system kept locking up and would not respond. The message I had prior to attempting to immunize was "14133 bad products already blocked, 43314 additional protections available, please immunize"
-AdAware- ran full scan with no problems, 1 item detected and removed
-Spyware terminator, no problems, removed items
-Super Antispyware. no problems, removed lots of items
-Avast deleted several viruses
-ATF Cleaner, ran with no problems
-Rescrub Xp found about 364 registry problems and fixed them.

I kept seeing the Trojan.Virtumonde, Trojan Downloader, and other adware in most of the fixes. After all of the cleaning, a reboot in safe mode, I still have the same problem with my icons and start menu missing. Still only able to access items through the windows task manager.

Do you have any other suggestions? I appreciate your help

You still didn't answer my question. Does everything come up normal in safe mode?

You may want to download hijackthis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/e...
and then copy and paste your results into:
http://hijackthis.de/
and then google your questionable results to see what is safe to remove.

The articles below give you some insight in to the virtumonde removal.

No, everything did not come up normal in safe mode. I only can still see just my wallpaper/background. Nothing else. And when accessing files or IE via the task manager, it still moves awfully slow and/or locks up. I will try your other suggestions on running hijack this and googling my results to see what is safe to remove.

Now will I have to google each entry line result? Please forgive me, I'm quite ignorant to alot of this. Thanks again.

There will be X's next to the entries you want to look up. The Green Checkmark ones are fine.

Are you using IE6 or IE7?

Ok, in IE7 go up to tools and then manage addons. See if there is anything in there that doesn't look familiar to you. If you don't know what it is, google it to see if it's harmfull.

Okay, I removed the couple of items after running the hijack this report and double checking with google. I also looked through my addons and everything was familiar. My system is moving much quicker.

But I still have no start menu, icons, just the blank desktop screen. I can only access files or programs via the task manager. How can I correct this?
