Comment: I have encountered a virus that I am 100% clueless about. My Windows starts normal and most of the application. Until a couple days back, I want to play a video clip on my pc and the problem surface.. The WMP was initialized not video was play and others application showed very slow. I've to wait the task manager to show and end WMP task. This took me about 5mins or more. I also found that most of the video players I installed on my PC will not work. Same problem w/WMP. I suspected it might due to virus or malware. I try to update my NV but found it couldn't be update. It made me more frustrated, it's higher chance my NV has disable by virus. I ran a couple of anti-spywares programs and on line virus scan. They did find something but still not able to find the big fish.. After they cleaned up those suspected files. I rebooed my pc and tried to run the video players again. I have the same problem; not able to run, 100% cpu usage, everything runs slow until I call up task manager to kill the video players. Does anybody have any idea what might be causing this? Hopefully my explaination tell the whole story...

Reply: (edit)Hi, I did as instructed. I ran CCleaner to clean up. Then ran Super AntiSpyware(updated after installation) but no suspected files being nabbed. I ran 'Hijackthis' and here is the log; Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 1:56:21 PM, on 1/12/2007 Platform: Windows 2000 SP4 (WinNT 5.00.2195) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINNT\System32\smss.exe C:\WINNT\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINNT\system32\services.exe C:\WINNT\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINNT\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINNT\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINNT\system32\spoolsv.exe D:\PROGRAM FILES2\EASY FILE & FOLDER PROTECTOR\EFPAP.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINNT\system32\hidserv.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\NISUM.EXE C:\WINNT\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINNT\system32\regsvc.exe C:\WINNT\system32\MSTask.exe C:\WINNT\system32\stisvc.exe C:\WINNT\System32\WBEM\WinMgmt.exe C:\Program Files\Linksys Wireless-G USB Wireless Network Monitor\WLService.exe C:\Program Files\Linksys Wireless-G USB Wireless Network Monitor\WUSB54Gv42.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ccPxySvc.exe C:\WINNT\Explorer.EXE C:\WINNT\system32\wfxsnt40.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Distillr\Acrotray.exe C:\WINNT\system32\internat.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NMBgMonitor.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NMIndexStoreSvr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Source Engine\OSE.EXE C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE D:\Program Files2\hijackthis v1.99.1\HijackThis.exe R0 - Reply: (edit)Try downloading and using EasyClean registry cleaner (free). You will find a lot of useless registry entries that might be running your pc for a loop or two. It's safe. The only task that could cause this problem of yours that I have had experience with is the CLI.exe or cli.exe process, installed everytime you add an ATI driver or tool. It's some kind of early transparent auto-update or usage monitor feature but causes lockup in up-to-date systems, possibly conflicting with the auto-update feature of Windows. It can be safely removed but you don't appear to have it running. My other suggestion is to uninstall and remove any and all Symantec products and replace it with CA anti-virus. NV is just too annoying and too demanding of the user. CA is free for a year and the only minor annoyance is when it auto-updates, but that is usually short and sweet, like the windows auto-update. The auto-update feature should always be turned on, a nuisance only if you have a slow connection but you definitely want the latest security features at all times. The personal computer world has benefited greatly of late where security is concerned, it just takes a long time any more to get your pc started and up and running once you turn it on. But turning it off every once in a while is good for it too you know. There is nothing permanent except change
