NIS 2004 problems with WinME

I downloaded and installed Norton Internet Security 2004 (NIS) on a PC running WinME. Problems began immediately:
(1) NIS will not allow me to change any settings which it shows as being "disabled" because it says I am not authorized to do so.
(2) I can no longer connect to the internet. My ISP is Bellsouth.net and before installing NIS I could connect through a dLink Router to their DSL service. Another PC in my home can still connect via the dLink Router. Ping and FTP work, but not Internet Explorer or Outlook Express.
(3) After reading something in the knowledgebase at www.symantec.com, I did as instructed and ran msconfig to make sure it said "Normal Startup - load all drivers" rather than "Selective Startup" which it was set to before I ran msconfig. When I made that change to normal startup, my desktop settings changed and I can no longer change them back to where they were before I ran msconfig. I hope that someone out there can help with some/all of these problems. Thanks.

I would stay away from such software.
The only thing I've seen from it so far at many PCs is nothing but troubles !

If you didn't buy it just uninstall it .
There are many better and freeware programs than this.
Avast or AVG antivirus , Kerio firewall...

If you cannot open NIS to establish th einternet access settings or anything else try unintsalling NIS. Did you have a previous version of NIS installed before? If you did you should use Symantec's removal tools(Rnav2003 and rnis). Uninstall 2004 and use the tools before you install NIS again. You might try installing the firewall separately from the antivirus program too.

Well I too wouldn't choose NIS, but it isn't bad software either as edsod would suggest.

Lets look at this one at a time shall we Patty?

1. ME doesn't have admin users, so perhaps you have set up a login for the NIS and you are not using the correct credentials to 'administer' NIS. Perhaps you could walk through this step by step for us so we can see for ourselves what is happening.

2. Hmm this question is a bit misleading. You say you don't have internet access but you can ping and ftp. Then you have internet access. This problem though isn't unusual for a FRESHLY INSTALLED FIREWALL. You will have to 'learn' applications. Reviewing these procedures, also reviewing symantec's web site for getting email and web to work through the firewall will help you get this working the way you want. Don't take this lightly a majority of incidents occur via web and email, so your firewall will only work as good as you let it.

3. This should still work if it doesn't then you have bigger problems (probably what lead you to get NIS in the first place) Before you work on fixing NIS, I would do this:

a) Remove NIS
b) Turn off system restore
c) Update and scan system fully for viruses
d) Install and/or update Ad-Aware and Spybot search and destroy and do full scans (questions on output can be posted back here).
e) Reinstall NIS and prepare to spend an hour or two to configure your applications to work through the firewall (again post back here with specific questions)

Good luck, don't let it frustrate you. A good working firewall is very nice peace of mind.

I did not have a previous version of NIS before I installed NIS 2004. I did have NAV 2004, but that appears to have disappeared entirely when NIS 2004 was installed. Since I cannot get online with the other problem computer to get any uninstall software from symantec.com, should I try to use the Install/Remove programs from the Control Panel?

Even if I had the Norton uninstall software, I am a little leary of trying to uninstall with that (although that may be my only option at this point) because I had lots of problems about 4 months ago on this same system when I tried unsuccessfully to uninstall NAV. I had to take the system into a shop for repair in order to correct whatever happened then when I tried the NAV uninstall!

Since I ran into this problem yesterday afternoon, I have been trying to find some ideas at various online sites. It appears to me that lots of people have had problems with NIS 2004 and I really haven't seen very many solutions yet! Maybe there should be something akin to the Surgeon General's Warning for Software...at least Norton products anyhow!

I thought I would try to use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall NIS 2004, but when I started to do that I found out that NIS 2004 is not listed so I can't even uninstall it! The icons are on my desktop, but it isn't listed as an installed program that I can uninstall. Any more suggestions?

Since you have ME, try using system restore. Pick a restore point before the NIS installation. This is one of those things that system restore is good for. Good luck!

Maybe I didn't say why I have such an opinion
about NIS.
It slowdown things (especially older PCs)
Firewall has problems with settings
Updates create problems from time to time
Very long boot time
and all these at installing-uninstalling
the software.
I would use only the antivirus and only as a standalone (if I had to...)


The NIS uninstall tool worked for me at a 98SE system with no problems six months ago.
Make sure you close everything,disable NIS
and then use it..

Symantec needs to recall NIS 2004 and forward a letter of apology to everyone that already bought and used it. To me it is the worst piece of software that ever came out of Symantec and am sure Peter Norton is not a proud guy right about now.

I had a similar problem with it and the only way I eventually got my connection running again was to log into a separate administrator's account in safemode, reinstall the POG, reboot and then remove it via add/remove programs. From that point on, the closest it has ever gotten to my PC is the jewel case it sits in.
