Comment:

Hi, i am certain that i have a keylogger/adware on my system. a 'nicksupdater.exe' error message regularly comes up and i have matched the logo with a keylogger company.
I have tried many adware, keylogger removal programs yet it still remains. I have also used xoftspy, which is claimed to be the most powerful spyware remover to no avail.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks.

Run this free online scan from Kaspersky http://kaspersky.com/kos/english/kavwebscan.html
Click Accept
When the updates are finished downloading, click Next, Scan Settings
Under Scan using the following antivirus database:, select extended
Make sure the Scan Archives and Scan Mail Bases options are selected as well. Click OK
Click My Computer and wait for the scan to finish
Click Save Report As. Under Save as type:, select Text file. Save this log to your Desktop and post a copy of it here.

Please post a Hijack This log so that the files associated with the virus/spyware/hijacker can be identified. You can download Hijack This at this link http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ then place it into a folder of it's on, such as C:\HJT, so that back up copies can be made and not clutter your desktop or other folders and the backup copies of deleted items can be easily located if needed.

Once saved double click HijackThis.exe, and press "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents into the text editor at this forum.

Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.

We will need a few tools.

Please download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/ We will need it later in safe mode

Download Ewido Security Suite then set it up this way Ewido Setup Instructions We will need this later in safe mode

Be sure to update Ewido

Download killbox to your desktop from this link Killbox We will need it later in safe mode

After you get the tools download reboot into safe mode.To do so restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;

Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter". then boot into your normal account.

Run Ht from safe mode, close all windows except HT, place a check to the left of the following items and press "fix checked":

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kthxor] epi.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Logon Application] C:\WINDOWS\System32\winIogon.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Catalyst Control Centre] atixvdm.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nicksupdater] C:\windows\updater\nicksupdater.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [kthxor] epi.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Catalyst Control Centre] atixvdm.exe

Exit Hijack This

Go to start>control panel>add\remove programs and uninstalle these programs if found:

NewDotNet

SaveNow

Bearshare

Run Ewido from safe mode and let it delete all that it finds.

Run ATF-Cleaner from safe mode. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Run Killbox from safe mode. Start Killbox place a tick next to [x]Delete on reboot "Press the All Files button"
Copy this whole list into the windows clipboard, all the bolded file paths below. Copy the following list of files to clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall6_38.exe

C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall7_14.exe

C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall7_22.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bpk.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bpkk.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bpkkhk.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bpkkr.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bpkkwb.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bpkr.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\i

C:\WINDOWS\updater\nicksupdater.exe

C:\WINDOWS\updater\nicksupdaterhk.dll

C:\WINDOWS\updater\nicksupdaterr.exe

D:\Program Files\BearShare\Installer\saveinstwm.exe/data0001.cab/VVSN.exe

D:\Program Files\BearShare\Installer\saveinstwm.exe/data0001.cab

D:\Program Files\BearShare\Installer\saveinstwm.exe

Next in Killbox go to File > Paste from clipboard
"Click on the All Files button."
Next click on the button that has the red circle with the white X in the middle.
It will ask for confimation to delete the files on next reboot and ask you if you want to reboot now.
Click Yes and let the computer reboot.

If the computer does not reboot automatically just reboot manually.

Reboot into safe mode again and delete these folders if found:

C:\WINDOWS\updater

D:\Program Files\BearShare

Navigate to and delete the contents of C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine

Post a new Hijack This log and a new Kaspersky scan.

We may have to resort to some stronger removal tools eg. "Brute Force Installer" but lets try this method first.

Also wanted to say that people like jabuck are a real credit to the site. Thanks a lot you have been really helpful. Also there doesnt seem to be any sign of the keylogger! :D

Also do you know what this is?
"R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1"
I have been getting errors that because of my proxy i cant post on some sites and generally my internet is a bit dodgy. Do you think this has got anything to do with it?

Thanks.

That entry is normally not removed but can be, often added by some type of software.

You Hijack Log is clean but not everthing is seen with it and it usually help to use more than antivirus scanner.I would suggest that you run these online scans and post the results.

Run the kaspersky scan again http://kaspersky.com/kos/english/kavwebscan.html
Click Accept
When the updates are finished downloading, click Next, Scan Settings
Under Scan using the following antivirus database:, select extended
Make sure the Scan Archives and Scan Mail Bases options are selected as well. Click OK
Click My Computer and wait for the scan to finish
Click Save Report As. Under Save as type:, select Text file. Save this log to your Desktop and post a copy of it here.

Run this free online scan from Panda

When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to the desktop, then copy/paste into the text editor and post it.
