Hi,

I have just installed McAffe on my computer and when i restarted, McAffe popped up with a notice saying that the file 'Mcdetect.exe is infected by the New Win32 virus and cannot be cleaned'. After I got rid of this it popped up with the same notice but about matlab.exe.. i think it is going through all my programmes.

I cannot open pretty much all of my programmes (except Office) - when I do, it comes up with a notice saying 'Windows cannot access the specifie devie, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to acess the item.'

Please help me! I don't know how to get rid of this, short of formating my computer.

NB: it also won't allow me to run the HijackThis file to generate a log.

Many many many thanks,
Bron.

If you disable system restore and reboot to safe mode then run your anti-virus program

I cannot access the internet from my computer anymore as my wireless network card is one of the programmes that i cannot run. I am currently using a friends computer to access the internet. Is there a way I can get around this?

Cheers,

Thank you. I have been able to run an online virus scanner in safe mode and it has found the virus W32.virut.A (about 1300 instances of it). I am trying to re-install McAffe, but don't know if it will work...

(Thank you, all the advice was very helpful).

Well how bout some more info. Did the online scan remove everything?. If it didn't, download and run 'DR.WEB Cureit'in safemode again. It already comes updated.

Once finished, get rid of McAfee, it's not very good.Forget that it's offered by AOL- i've tested it and it's great and no spam received and get this- it's powered by 'Kaspersky'.

Try this Dr.Web as Murr suggests in safe mode but if you are able to temporarily turn off System Restore
If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer
