I've just noticed two new cookies from this site. They are SLUs and SLPs. Does anybody know what purpose they serve and why they should not be removed?

Interesting.
I just had to re-login (I too save just one cookie). I can log-in fine again now with just the new replacement, no others.
Derek.W

Hello,
I haven't changed the way cookies work on this site since I added the option to automatically add follow posts to My Computing.Net. Since that was a while ago, I'm not exactly sure what is happening with you.
Justin

Thanks, I regularily check which cookies are stored on my computer. I use mozilla, it gives me a constant reminder to check. These new cookies have never been there before. The pairs (SLUs and SLPs) appear for each forum I have visited. They have an expiry date of eend of session.
My daughter recently installed MSN messanger on my computer. I have disbled that in msconfig. I'll try a reboot to see if that has anything to do with it.

Mine could have been any old thing.
It happened when I came on, having immediately beforehand entered (unusually) via Message Find. Could have been a glich at either end.
Derek.W

That's interesting too.
I had problems keep losing my cookie and having to log in again yesterday. Tonight it has been fine (but it could still have been my problem).
Derek.W

Derek, it seems we had opposite problems. I had too many cookies and you didn't have enough! I should have shared!
I did notice that I was transfering something from static.vpptechnologies.com over the weekend. I haven't seen it this morning. I even tried blocking that site to no avail.
Maybe Justin will come back and tell us if he fixed something.

Rimfire
From #3 Justin says he hasn't changed anything, so unless by chance he now has then I suppose I just regard our two posts as an odd co-incidence.
Dunno what it was in my case but always willing to believe that computers are well capable of gliches, so it could just as easily have been my end.
Hey, liked the idea of cookie sharing tho LOL. Probably a lot safer than Peer to Peer.
Derek.W

Hello,
I have noticed that problem Derek is having. I have to keep logging back in. However, I have changed absolutely nothing server side. Have any of you figured out what might be going on?
Justin

I use Window Washer to keep certain cookies.
What I found (W98SE) is that all of a sudden the cookie in c:\windows\tif's vanished but the one in c:\windows\cookies remained. Nothing had changed in Window Washers settings.I'm 99% certain this cookie vanished while I was online reading other posts. When I then went back to
My Computing.Net I had to login once more.Last night I re-created my cookie several times and it quickly lost it again. Tonight it has been fine so far.
I haven't a clue about the reason but maybe this further info about the symptoms will help someone understand it.
In view of Rimfires post (with different symptoms) it is tempting to believe that something or other was going on.
Derek.W

I use Mozilla 1.7.2.
Another thing I have noticed, I'm not getting the version tracker cookies anymore. I didn't really believe that if I kept deleting them they would give up and go away!
I tried to have a look at that 'static.vpptechnologies.com' which hitched a ride on these forums over the weekend. I don't think they want us to visit them "Error, directory listing denied". Leaving off the 'static' bit displayed a blank page.

Thanks Derek, It seems that Spoton is an Internet Explorer plugin. As previously mentioned, I choose not to use that software. I've run Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, A-squared and even HJT. I believe my system is clean.
Then I opened IE to see if any ads poped up. None did. Of course I had to run Ad-Aware to remove the two tracking cookies I always get on my ISP's home page.
The only thing that has changed at my end is the kids are at school and their computers are turned off. I don't know how, or if another computer on my network could have caused this. To add to that I decommissioned one of them for an upgrade yesterday (the old Pentium Pro was getting a little slow) so it would be difficult to recreate the exact circumstances.

Hello,
All of these things Derek points out also seem to be specific to him. I'm hoping its just a coincidence. If anyone else complains about Computing.Net forgetting his or her cookies, I'll try to look into it further.
Justin

BTW,
I can't comment on version tracker's cookies. I haven't looked into how they work.
Sorry,
Justin

Yeah Justin, I tend to agree. I find it difficult to see how a website problem could possibly delete a cookie file on my machine.
It's very easy to get fooled by co-incidences.
Derek.W

Hello,
I certainly hope its not messed up. Nothing aggrivates me more than when I change absolutely nothing but, somehow, something that was was working breaks.
Justin

Mine's better than ever thanks.
Though it would be nice to know what exactly was going down over the weekend.
