The process will be different, depending on your router. Generally you would sign in to your router by accessing it through a browser "ex 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.100" are most common and enter the user/password when prompted. if you have not yet set this password try admin as a user and leave password blank or leave user blank with admin as a password.
once you have gained access to your router there will be a tab regarding wireless or wireless security. set it as WPA with the passphrase of your choosing. I say wpa because it is fairly secure with an access key that is not an annoying long string of numbers.
