I woke up this morning and saw a report on the local news channel about the spread of the Netsky virus. Of course, that means today will be extremely busy because management will freak out.

I've done a little research about this virus, but can't find whether or not there is a M$ patch that will prevent this virus from propogating. Is there one or will this be a reactive situation?

Is there a site that tells me this type of stuff? I've checked M$, McAfee, and Symantec.

Many thanks,
Mick

I don't think Microsoft can stop Viruses propogating - only Users can do that by keeping their AV Programs up to date

But if the operating systems are properly patched the hole won't be there for the worm/virus/whatever to exploit.

The first line of defense to prevent a virus is the user. Everyone knows or should know that Microsoft operating systems are the most widely used operating systems and that they are vulnerable to attack. If you do any of the following things using Outlook/Express; open attachments from "friends" or strangers without scanning them, have your preview pane enabled, have no or low security settings established you are at high risk to get a virtus. Unfortunately when you get infected, it is just the beginning, as you continue the spread of the virus through your "address book" that you have not configured for maximum safety. So everyone listed in your address book gets a "gift" from you. Take care and all the best!

My bad. I thought it was a worm that would attack file shares and consume my network bandwidth.

Yeah, I'll explain that to users. I'm sure from now on they won't open foreign emails, visit sites they shouldn't, delete files from the server(s), put floppy disks in cd drives, etc, etc, etc.

C'mon, if it was that easy we wouldn't have jobs. I could send an email to my users with an attachment and put in big, bold letters - DO NOT OPEN THIS ATTACHMENT. I bet 10 - 20% would. I might have to try something like that just to see.
