I need ant-virus protection for this old OS. My old McAfee (4.0) is outdated, and they don't support Win98.

I tried Grisoft AVG, but get a "kernel" error.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks in advance, this site has been my lifeline for years.

I have been haveing trouble with the old McAfee 4 and Win98Se, Sometimes removeing and reinstalling fixes the problems. But McAfee has become a big system hog. I have AVG Free runging on 3 or 4 Win98Se's with out problems, I would down load a new copy of AVG for majorgeeks and try it again.

Thank you Paul. I tried to uninstall AVG 7.5 to re-download it, and well...the uninstall doesn't work! I see that at least one other person here has had this problem with the new version.

The message I received on uninstall was to the effect of "improperly trying to INSTALL on a workstation with unsupported OS" (paraphrased).

I still have McAfee Virusscan Professional installed because it has my firewall and other programs in it.

I downloaded Avast! and it is running "resident", but can't seem to get it to scan. (I can't get the control menu.)

I'm not a "majorgeek" so appreciate the help! :)

I would give Antivir a try. You can get it at http://www.free-av.com/.

Try NOD32. It supports Win98 and is very low on resources. You won't really notice a hit on performance.

sounds like you have residue files imbedded in your PC. Norton and McAfee are famous for that. Why not go to the McAfee site and get the uninstaller for your version. Once you've cleaned those files out Avast will run properly.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Thank you very much Dan, Capt and XPUser. I got Avast! to run by combining the two icons (resident and VRDB) and right clicking to uncover the commands. A vscan is running right now and has uncovered a Kuang virus.

I will try to remove McAfee and a recently downloaded version of NAV that, too, did not uninstall.

I could see from the vscan that AVG has not fully uninstalled, either.

Perhaps the Kuang virus is causing me problems. Any experience with this?

Many thanks,
Echoe

XPUser, thank you so much.

Well, after hours of searching, I found McAfee and Norton's utility for removing unsupported products...ran them, but not sure they are really uninstalled, because I found files, not in ADD/REMOVE but through Explorer and just manually deleted them. I know this means there are probably files still located on my computer...is there a way to find out? I ran all the searches for the recommended files search, and Registry Repair Pro, etc.

Now, I have freezing and shutdown problems. When scandisk runs on start up, it gives me an error message about "unable to repair long filename, run MS Scandisk". What should I do? I thought the bootup scan disk program was MS Scandisk?

Also, Avast! is running, but AVG will not launch, and when in Explore I found avg.exe files in three different directories! (Windows Temp, NAV and an unknown directory beginning with R (just letters).

Avast! crashes/freezes after hours of running, almost at the very end of the scan. It isolated Win32Kuan2 virus, a com file, a kernel file and a winsock.dll file (from my memory).

I had to write AVG sales support because I could not get tech support for uninstall of the free 7.5 version, will see if they contact me. As I said, I tried their uninstall utility twice, and it responded by saying I couldn't INSTALL on a workstation. (Personal pc here.) Now it won't launch at all.

I also can't log onto my favorite game on Yahoo, but can access all the prepages except the actual rooms you play in. Is this a javascript or activex problem? This problem is why I tried to find a good virus program to begin with, I'm sure I have something serious going on.

I'm exasperated. Any further help is greatly appreciated!!! *thud

Update:

Scandisk continuously stops and starts without completing because another program is running? I have shut all down, including avast!, could it be AVG, (which loads its memory scan on boot). Please advise. *sigh

I'd reinstall AVG without the boot scanner. I also noticed (when I still had 98SE) that the boot scanner sometimes jammed the machine. Otherwise AVG worked fine with my 98SE. I found Avast! slow and it took a lot more resources than AVG.

Thanks Lightforce, if I can ever get AVG uninstalled, I might reinstall it. Avast is very, very slow on my system.

Update: Not only does scandisk stop and start over again in a loop, so does defrag.

Any help on how to stop running processes so that scandisk and defrag can run?

You must get rid of McAfee totally from your OS...(Download 'Regseeker')use search and then delete what it finds....You can't run two AVs successfully together, they conflict with each other..

If you want a Firewall use 'Outpost'..it will run nicely with the new AVG 7.5 and AVG Antispyware progs..

Cheers, Michael.
