Comment:

I installed NAV 2005 yesterday, and then went to bed, and this morning I checked my Windows firewall settings and my windows firewall was OFF, and when I opened a program that required to be connected to the interent, it was Norton who told me about it and asked me if I wanted t allow it or block it.

Now, I just bought Norton Antivirus 2005, not Norton Firewall, so is Norton 2005 packed with a personal firewall, or why did it turned off my XP firewall?

PS. should I update my LiveUPdate version? I have version 2.5 and according to symantec's site version 2.6 is out. And how should my LiveUpdate setting be? express mode or interactive mode?

thanks in advance

I have not heard of NAV turning the XP firewall off. What happens when you turn the XP firewall back on? There was a news report about a XP firewall security flaw that allowed it to be taken over by a malicious attack. Is the XP firewall your only firewall or do you have a router that has a hardware firewall. Most people do not rely on just the XP firewall and either use a router, and/or software firewall like Sygate, Zone Alarm, Kerio, Outpost. If you are going to purchase a software firewall, I would recommend LooknStop. There was a test that Fred Langa had in a recent Langlist newsletter that showed it was the best one. I would get liveupdate 2.5 and set it to the express mode with all three boxes checked. Liveupdate will automatically uninstall the previous version when you install version 2.6. HTH

well, I turned it on yesterday, and today it's still on, so I don't know what that was
but just to be sure, I did format c: and it's all good now

PS. So what about Live Update, should I download version 2.6 or just change settings and let LU update itself?

thanks

I do not think 2.6 will automatically update now, as I had to download and install it manually. You will need to download it from Symantec's download site. Make sure to download the correct one, do not get the corporate version!

I decided to upgrade later on.

but I found out what the problem was/is.

If I go to Control Panel and open the "Windows Firewall" it says it's off. And when I check the "security center" it says "Windows Firewall" it's on, however, it's not exactly on, it says: "Norton Internet Worm Protection is activated"
so it means Norton is protecting me of any worms but that's it basically, not a full firewall.

so what should I do?

and I don't have any other firewall, I have my router's firewall but I no longer have a router, I'm just behind a cable modem, then a swith, and the my PC

Help me please

thanks

I would get the Sygate personal edition(free). Install it and the turn the XP firewall off when it is up and running. In the security center>resources> change the way the the center reports to eliminate the XP firewall warning.

I'm gonna go with your choise and try it out and see if I like it.

I plan on getting a router, that way I could have both a software and a hardware firewall.

thanks for all of your help!
