mzÉ - showed up on a thumb drive I was transfering files to - the time stamp was today, within the time period I was doing the above. It was in a sub-directory called <Internet>
Can't erase it because it has o bytes, and programs can't find it. Windows defender doesn't pick it up, and NSW 2006 likewise.
Am concerned because I had to reformat my laptop because it was freezing up. HP told me I had a virus.
The above <mzÉ> is on my desktop. Is this thing dangerous?

Hard to see how it could be if it's a zero byte file - sounds more like the remnants of a file error. Might want to perform a disk check.

It doesn't hurt to be vigilant. If a disk scan doesn't get rid of it, you can probably remove it from a command prompt using a wildcard (carefully though) - something like this:
cd\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop
del mz*.
... which will should delete all files from the desktop starting with 'mz' which have no extension. Odds are there's only the one
