My external hard drive files is invisible!!

May 7, 2011 at 23:44:23
Specs: Windows Vista
I am using a verbatim 250 gb hard drive in which i’ve stored almost 207 gb of files. My friend inserted it to his lap and then after that while i tried to use it, i saw lots of shortcut folders but none of my files!! When i double clicked on one file this is what came-
“The item” beidu-scr” that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly”, Do u want to delete this shortcut?”
I cant lose none of my data plus i seriously need my files for an upcoming project. What should i do?

First: remove the virus that caused the problem.
Usually a good anti-virus can remove the origional virus. I recommend:
avast -
second: scan the system with a malware removal tool
malwarebytes -
(both of these have a free version, that is the why i recommend them)
make sure that these scan your pen/usb drive as well
Third: find your lost files
For example, go to command prompt (CMD) on your computer and run the following DOS command. Here we assume that the drive is G: drive. If its not G: then replace G with correct letter as applicable.
ATTRIB -H -R -S /S /D G:\*.*
This will show all files on the drive in question, so your data is back at least.
