my contact address book is being accessed by

Specs: Windows XP
my address book of contacts is being mysteriously accessed and e-mails are being sent from my e-mail address to my contacts with strange ads of medicinal prescriptions such as Viagara.

My contacts then e-mail me telling me about the strange e-mails they are receiving from me. Some of the e-mails are blocked and are returned with a note from the postmaster that transmission had failed. How do I stop this culprit of using my contact address book?

If you are using webmail - Hotmail, GoogleMail, YahooMail etc. then you must change your password to something stronger. If you are using 'normal' email, accessed through Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird etc. then you need to start by doing a full scan with your security suite. The chances are that the email addresses have already been harvested so there's little else you can do after the event.

The addresses may also have been obtained if you are someone who forwards emails to your contacts without using .bcc, so all of the addresses are readily available to allrecipients.
