Comment:

I've had countless problems with my computers these days. Internet is slow, pop-ups keep, well, popping up, search-space has replaced my starting page, and everything seems sluggish.

A friend of mine advised me to download ad-aware, which I did. It helped destroy 280 unwanted files. Go me ! But it didn't help against the countless problems I was experiencing, so he told me to d/l Hijack This and use it.

Here are the logs I got. I'd love to have your advice about those. Please, bear in mind that I don't understand much about computers. Imagine a *very* slow child, and you'll get the picture...

Well, here are the logs:

Also uninstall P2P Networking through Add/Remove Programs. If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.

Subsequently remove the P2P Networking folder in C:\Windows\System32, if still there.

Go to windows update and install all critical updates.

Run cwshredder, it would haved removed the host files, (the 01 entries).
Run it anyway. Click next to run it.
cwshredder.zip

cwshredder.exe

Think about dumping evil Kazaa, trojans are easy to spread there.

Post another log after you do above.

I've done all you've told me to do, and it seems my computer's slowly getting better. However, there are still problems I keep getting. For instance, whenever I restart my computer, I get a message that states that the website "www.smutserver.com" (which turns out to be a porno website) is trying to make connection, or something like this. So I'm probably still infected with something...

Also, the search-space stuff came back after I fixed it, so there must be something that puts it back...

Bluefrog,

This line is invalid:

C:\windows\winlogon.exe

Should be:

C:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe

So ...

Disable System Restore, the ProcKill-AF Trojan is memory resident and could restore itself.
When we're through you can enable and it will create a new restore point.

Close all browser windows and have HJT fix:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.search-space.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.search-space.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = http://www.search-space.com/

If you know what this is keep it otherwise it can go

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = Liens

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winlogon] c:\windows\winlogon.exe

In the 017's this:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{4CB7698F-B0C4-48C6-BBCF-DB382EBB1F1B}: NameServer = 80.10.246.1 80.10.246.132

Is from a domain named the Ripe Network in Amsterdam, so it can probably go.

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\windows: NameServer = 69.57.146.14,69.57.147.175
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{B2C2B9EC-A691-44B8-9E92-068970D16B0F}: NameServer = 69.57.146.14,69.57.147.175
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{E491A171-FDA3-4F8B-9E98-AC1172917897}: NameServer = 69.57.146.14,69.57.147.175
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\windows: NameServer = 69.57.146.14,69.57.147.175
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\..\windows: NameServer = 69.57.146.14,69.57.147.175

The above resolve to Everyones Internet, Inc
in Houston TX. If that looks familiar keep, otherwise they can go.

Reboot into safe mode(tap F8 key on reboot)and delete:

C:\windows\winlogon.exe
----------------

Be careful here, do not delete the valid one which is:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
----------------
Reboot normally and run CWS one more time and post a new log, if it's clean we can enable System Restore.

Well, thanks a lot for your help, it seems things are getting better.

I've followed your instructions. CWS tells me my system's totally safe now, which is a good thing.

However, Ad-Aware still tells me I have 6 corrupted files (cookies) everytime I log on. I guess there's one last thing I should do to finish this cleaning up.

At any rate, thanks a lot for your help. I was growing quite desperate here ;)

That's the latest HJT log:

Bluefrog,

Things are looking a lot better. It is perfectly normal for Adaware to pickup tracking cookies everytime you go on the net.
Just delete them.

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{4CB7698F-B0C4-48C6-BBCF-DB382EBB1F1B}: NameServer = 80.10.246.1 80.10.246.132

This one looks odd. Go Here and paste 80.10.246.1 in the search field. Is that your ISP? Odd name eh? I would get rid of it if not.

If things are running smoothly go back and enable System Restore to get a good one.

You are welcome. Had some good help.

Didn't look like my ISP at all.... Ah well, I don't know how I got infected in the first place, but that was quite a mess. Thanks again. Like I told you, I don't know much about computers, and erasing things blindly wouldn't have been the best thing to do...

Before I'm through with this, would you happen to have any advice on how to protect my computer against such problems ? I had Norton Antivirus, but it didn't warn me at all, so I guess it isn't enough...
